Late Surge Propels Duquesne Past Minutewomen, 60-57
December 31, 2017 | Women's Basketball
Mulligan grabs career-high and facility-record 22 rebounds in setback
PITTSBURGH – University of Massachusetts senior Maggie Mulligan recorded her 26th career double-double with 14 points and 22 rebounds, but Duquesne held the Minutewomen scoreless from the field in the final five minutes, six seconds of the game to help the home squad to a 60-57 decision over UMass on Sunday at the Palumbo Center.
Mulligan's 22 boards, in addition to resetting her previous single-game career-high of 18, exceeded top marks for a Duquesne opponent (21) and within the Palumbo Center (21), which opened in 1988. Both of those figures were posted by former Minutewoman Jennifer Butler in a game played on Jan. 17, 2002. Mulligan's performance was also the first 20-plus rebound effort by a UMass player since Butler came down with 23 against La Salle on March 6, 2003.
Sunday's loss drops Massachusetts to 8-6 on the season and 0-1 in Atlantic 10 play, while the Dukes are now 11-3 and 1-0 against league foes.
Bre Hampton-Bey had a team-best four assists for the Minutewomen, while Mulligan had four blocks and Hailey Leidel grabbed three steals. For the day, UMass shot 34.8 percent (24-of-69) from the field while the Dukes posted a 33.3 percent (21-of-63) clip shooting.
A very closely-contested first half was witness to three ties and nine lead changes as neither side could build a lead of more than four points. The Dukes were sparked at the offensive end by Chassidy Omogrosso who had 16 points over the first 20 minutes while seven of Duquesne's 16 blocks on the day came in the first half.
UMass came out on fire after halftime and would ultimately start the stanza on a 12-2 run fueled equally by Mulligan and Hampton-Bey. A stout defensive effort on both sides then ensued as both teams went without scoring for over four minutes. The teams exchanged 3-pointers in the final minute, with Jessica George knocking down a triple for UMass with 29 seconds on the clock to give the visitors a 43-37 lead at the time.
Noteworthy in the third period was that the UMass defense held its opposition to just 11.1 percent (2-of-18) shooting in the third quarter, marking the fourth time this season that UMass has held a team under 20 percent from the field in a single frame.
A clutch 3-pointer by Vashnie Perry with 5:06 remaining seemed to swing momentum in favor of the Minutewomen as UMass swelled its lead to a game-high of nine at 56-47. However, the Dukes then countered with a 13-1 run to close the game and secure the victory. The Minutewomen did have a game-tying opportunity in the waning stages of the game, but a 3-point attempt by Leah McDerment would not fall.
Although UMass dominated the paint by a 30-16 margin, Duquesne forced 21 Minutewomen turnovers and converted that figure into 18 points.
Massachusetts returns to the confines of the Mullins Center for a Wed., Jan. 3, 2018 contest against Fordham which begins at 5 p.m. That game is part of a doubleheader as the UMass men's basketball team will face George Mason for a 7:30 p.m. tipoff. Both games will be aired on Eleven Sports and be covered regionally on NESN Plus. Eleven Sports can be viewed on DIRECTV channel 623, Verizon Fios channel 597, AT&T U-verse channel 1665 and on Fubo.tv and PlayStation Vue.
