Four different goal scorers led the way as the Minutemen extended their unbeaten streak to six matches in 5-0 victory.
AMHERST, Mass. – University of Massachusetts men's soccer team extended their unbeaten streak to six consecutive matches as the Minutemen routed Duquesne 5-0 in the Atlantic 10 home opener to remain unbeaten at Rudd Field Saturday afternoon. Massachusetts (8-2-2, 2-0-0 Atlantic 10) posted the most goals in a game since a win over Siena in 2013 and secured their first 5-0 shutout win since beating Saint Joseph's at home in 2003.
The Minutemen were in early danger in the opening minutes of the match as Duquesne's (3-8-1, 1-2-0 Atlantic 10) Zach Hall got behind the UMass defenders and sent his shot off the right post in the fourth-minute.
Davis Smith continued his hot streak on the attack for UMass as he opened up the scoring in the 16th-minute on an Alex DeSantis corner kick to give Smith his fourth goal is as many matches. Smith, the reigning A-10 Rookie of the Week recipient, pushed his season goal tally to six after Henry Steinkamp opened up Mike Rita, who beat the keeper and sent a cross over to Smith before put it in the back of the net in the 59th-minute.
Christian Labeck came on as a substitute to score his first collegiate goal in the winding moments of the first half. After both a penalty kick from Matthew Mooney and a shot by Jared McCleary caromed off the goal post, Labeck cleaned up the rebound to extend the lead to two heading into the break.
The momentum carried into the second half with Connor O'Dwyer's first goal of the 2017-18 campaign on a deep throw from Casey Hamill that was headed off the bounce into the back of the net, putting UMass ahead 3-0 in the 48th-minute.
Samuel Asamoah put the final exclamation point on the afternoon as he dribbed through a pair of Duke defenders before beating the keeper for the fifth and final goal.
UMass out-shot Duquesne 16-10, firing nine shots on goal that led to the five scores. Bardia Asefnia held strong in net for 78 minutes, picking up two saves before being replaced down the stretch by John Black, who recorded a save of his own on a shot from Zion Beaton in the 83rd-minute.
The Atlantic 10 slate continues for the Minutemen on Wednesday with a trip to Philadelphia, Pa. to take on Saint Joseph's at 7 p.m. before returning home to Rudd Field on Saturday for a matchup against La Salle.
