Swimming And Diving Set To Begin Season At Colgate Invitational

Both the men's and women's teams set to kickoff new campaign this weekend in Hamilton, N.Y.
AMHERST, Mass. – University of Massachusetts men's and women's swimming and diving teams will begin their 2017-18 campaign this weekend as they travel to Hamilton, N.Y. for the Colgate Invitational on Friday and Saturday. Both UMass squads will compete in the event alongside Colgate, Cleveland State, Le Moyne and St. Bonaventure while St. Francis will join the women's competition only at the Lineberry Natatorium.

The men's team returns to the Colgate Invitational as the defending meet championships after last season's showing that saw the Minutemen claim six individual event titles on the final day of competition. Now senior Chris DiGiacomo led the way with first-place finishes in the 200 IM and the 200 back while Oliver Wyeth adding a win in the 500 free on his way to being named the A-10 Co-Performer of the Week.

The Minutemen were picked to finish third in the A-10 with 51 points and a first-place vote after placing third at the conference championships last season. UMass welcomes 12 newcomers for the 2017-18 slate to go along with 16 returners, including senior diver Trent Kindvall, who finished 31st at the NCAA Zone A Regional Meet in the three-meter dive a season ago.

The women's team finished second at the event last season with 839.5 points while junior Ansley Baker and sophomore Olga Egkorova each took two first place finishes in their individual events before collectively winning the 400 free relay.

The UMass women enter the upcoming campaign having been picked to finish fourth in the Atlantic 10 after finishing third at the Atlantic 10 Championships back in February. The Minutewomen return 16 from last season's teams and welcome in seven newcomers for 2017-18.

Senior diver Emma Roush returns for UMass after finishing 15th in the one-meter dive at the NCAA National Swimming and Diving Championships, earning Honorable Mention All-America honors at the event held in the IU Natatorium in Indianapolis, Ind. Roush, a four-time conference event champion, was recognized as the Atlantic 10 Most Outstanding Diver at the championships as she won her third straight one-meter diving title.

Both teams will continue competition the following weekend with a trip to West Point, N.Y. to take on Army before returning home to host their first competition on Sunday, October 22 in Rogers Pool. The men will host NJIT while the women will take on Vermont with both beginning at 1 p.m.
