Men's XC Poised For A-10 Championships Saturday

And They're Off
- The University of Massachusetts men's cross country team will compete in its fifth meet of the 2017 cross country season Saturday at the long-awaited Atlantic 10 Championship. On Saturday morning, the Minutemen will take to the starting line at Oatlands Plantation in Leesburg, Virginia for a 5-mile race at 10 a.m. UMass faces off against Dayton, Davidson, Duquesne, Fordham, George Mason, George Washington, La Salle, Rhode Island, Richmond, St. Bonaventure, Saint Joseph's, Saint Louis and VCU.
Last Time Out
-Three Minutemen enjoyed top-10 finishes in the field of 114 runners, propelling UMass to victory at the CCSU Mini Meet. UMass took the top spot in a field of 21 teams with 57 points.
- Sophomore Erik Engstrom led the way for UMass in third overall. The East Hampton, New York, native finished the 5K in 15 minutes, 14.9 seconds.
-On his heels, Dawson Bathgate was fifth overall with a time of 15:16.9 as the Minutemen's No. 2 scorer.
-The third runner across for UMass and eighth overall was junior Mike Famiglietti, clocking in at 15:23.9.
Bathgate Honored
- Dawson Bathgate was recognized as the Atlantic 10 men's cross country Performer of the Week for the first time in his collegiate career on Oct. 10. Bathgate was the lead runner for the Minutemen with a 12th place individual finish at the New England Championships on Oct. 7, completing the 8K course in 25:37.3 at Franklin Park. The Rochester, New York native's performance helped UMass earn third in the team scoring (133) in the 27-team field.
Engstrom Recognized by A-10
- Sophomore Erik Engstrom earned Men's Cross Country Performer of the Week recognition on Sept. 26. Engstrom was the top finisher for the Minutemen for the second time in his career, completing the 8K course at the Coast-to-Coast Battle in Beantown in 25:32.
Welcome Back
- The Minutemen's 11-man cross country roster includes 10 individuals who raced in at least one meet last season. Three individuals: Samuel Conway, Mike Famiglietti and Kendall Westhoff all finished in the team scoring three or more times last season.
- Conway, the squad's lone senior, was UMass top finisher at the 2016 Minuteman Invitational, taking 15th overall. He was the No. 2 finisher for the Minutemen at the Coast-to-Coast Battle in Beantown last season and was fifth for the team at the Paul Short Invitational.
- Westhoff placed in the team's top-five in each of his first four meets of his collegiate career last season. His best finish was as the team's No. 3 runner at the Paul Short Invitational.
- Famigletti ended his sophomore campaign on a high note, finishing in the scoring in his final three meets of the year.
New Addition
- Christopher Polanco is the lone newcomer on UMass' cross country roster, a freshman from Fitchburg, Massachusetts. Polanco won D1 Massachusetts Cross Country titles with Lowell High School in 2014 and 2015 and was a two-time Boston Globe and Boston Herald All-Scholastic honoree.
Changing of the Guard
- In July, Director of Athletics Ryan Bamford announced David Jackson as director of men's track and field and cross country, with Ken O'Brien moving into a Coach Emeritus role with the men's cross country program after 50 years of service as head coach of men's track and field and cross country. Jackson enters his ninth year working with the program in 2017-18.
Next Up
- The Minutemen travel to Buffalo, New York on Fri., Nov. 10 for the NCAA Northeast Regional Championships. The Minutemen will compete 1:00 p.m. at the Audubon Golf Course.
