Minutemen Topped by UMass Lowell, 7-3

LOWELL, Mass. - University of Massachusetts baseball was unable to climb back from an early 3-0 deficit, falling 7-3 at UMass Lowell on Wednesday afternoon at LeLacheur Park. The loss leaves the Minutemen at 14-24 on the season, while the River Hawks improve to 18-27 overall.
Ian Strom and Joe Consolmagno opened up the bottom of the first for UMass Lowell with a double to left center and a walk, respectively, and later scored on sacrifice flies by Steve Passatemo and Chris Sharpe to give the River Hawks a 2-0 lead.
UMass Lowell added another run on a sacrifice fly in the third when Consolmagno led off with a triple to right and came in on a fly ball from Passatemo.
UMass cut the deficit to 3-1 in the top of the fourth when freshman Ryan Lever drew a two-out walk and junior Jon Avallone plated him with a double off the right field fence.
The River Hawks took the run back and added another in the bottom of the fifth. Stom singled in Ben Prada and later came home on a wild pitch to bring the score to 5-1.
In the top of the sixth, the Minutemen pulled to within two once more at 5-3. Junior Dylan Morris started off the frame with a single through the right side and the next batter, junior Mike Hart, drove him in with a triple to center. Hart then scored UMass’ third run of the contest on an RBI groundout by senior John Jennings.
That would be as close as the Minutemen would get to a comeback, though, as UMass Lowell capped off the scoring with two runs on three hits in the bottom of the eighth.
Senior Kevin Lacy started on the mound for UMass and took the loss (0-2), surrendering five runs, three earned, on six hits and walking one over four innings. River Hawks’ starter Ricky Constant collected the win (1-3), limiting the Minutemen to one run on three hits over five innings with three walks and five strikeouts.
UMass next travels to Kingston, R.I., to face Rhode Island in an Atlantic 10 series beginning with game one on Fri., May 13, at 3 p.m.
