UMass Baseball Outdueled by Rhode Island, 3-1

KINGSTON, R.I. - Junior Ryan Moloney worked a solid eight innings in his start, but University of Massachusetts baseball was outdueled by Rhode Island, 3-1, on Friday afternoon at Bill Beck Field. The loss leaves the Minutemen at 14-25 overall, 7-12 in Atlantic 10 action, while the Rams improve to 23-22 and 14-5 in conference play.
With the teams deadlocked in a scoreless battle, URI plated the first run of the contest in the bottom of the fifth. Connor Foreman singled with one out and went to second on an error. Chase Livingston followed with another single that moved Foreman to third and Matt O’Neil brought the run home with an RBI groundout.
Breaking up a no-hit bid for the Rams’ Tyler Wilson, UMass tied the score at 1-1 in the top of the eighth. Sophomore Hunter Carey struck out, but reached base on a passed ball and freshman Ryan Lever followed with a bunt single. After Carey went to third on an error, freshman Cooper Mrowka plated him with a sacrifice fly.
The Rams added two runs in the bottom half of the inning to climb back in front, though. Livingston and Derek Gardella both drew walks and Chris Hess knocked in Livingston with a double for the go-ahead run. Mike Foley, who pinch ran for Gardella, came in on a ground ball by Martin Figueroa.
Moloney took the loss (2-5) for UMass despite limiting URI to three runs, two earned, on six hits over eight innings with two walks and four strikeouts. Wilson moved to 10-1 on the season for the Rams with the victory, tossing a complete game and allowing one unearned run on three hits with one walk and 13 strikeouts.
The teams will be back in action tomorrow, May 14, with game two of the weekend series set for a 1 p.m. start at Bill Beck Field.
