STORRS, Conn. - University of Massachusetts baseball suffered a 5-0 setback to Connecticut in the teams' Tuesday afternoon matchup at J.O. Christian Field. The loss leaves the Minutemen at 14-23 on the season, while the Huskies improve to 25-22.
UConn broke up a scoreless deadlock in the bottom of the fourth. Bobby Melley lined a leadoff single into right, while Joe DeRoche-Duffin followed by drawing a walk. After Melley stole third, he came in for the first run of the game on an RBI single from Bryan Daniello. John Toppa drove in the Huskies' second run with a ground ball and Tyler Gnesda capped off the three-run inning with an RBI single to center.
The following inning, a two-out solo home run by Melley pushed the score to 4-0 and UConn added its fifth and final run in the bottom of the sixth on a sacrifice fly from Zac Susi.
Making his first start on the mound of the season, junior Mike Geannelis took the loss (1-4), allowing four runs on six hits over five innings with two walks and four strikeouts. Andrew Zapata collected the win (3-1) for the Huskies, limiting the Minutemen to one hit while walking three and striking out four over five innings of work.
UMass scattered six hits in the contest, all singles, led by freshman Cooper Mrowka's 2-for-3 afternoon at the plate.
