KINGSTON, R.I. - University of Massachusetts men's track and field won four medals on Sunday as the squad claimed third at the 2016 Atlantic 10 Indoor Track and Field Championship, held at Rhode Island's Mackal Field House. The Minutemen finished with 90.83 points, trailing only Rhode Island (188.66 points) and George Mason (184.83 points), while holding a healthy margin over fourth-place Saint Joseph's (69 points).

After winning the heptathlon and scoring in the high jump, Kris Horn was selected as the men's Most Outstanding Field Performer for the meet. Horn led three UMass scorers in the heptathlon with 5,318 points to break his own school record and the Atlantic 10 Championship record. After holding the lead through four events after day one, Horn used a win in the 1,000m (2:52.06) and second-place showings in the 60m hurdles (8.75) and pole vault (14-9.00) to cement the victory. Senior Nick Ingham also reached the podium, taking third with 4,914 points, a personal record to improve his No. 2 all-time mark in the school record book, while freshman Jonathan Collins captured fifth with 4,413 points.

Senior Benjamin Groleau and junior Cory Thomas went 1-2 in the mile run with Groleau winning the A-10 title with a time of 4 minutes, 11.67 seconds, while Thomas crossed the line in 4 minutes, 13.81 seconds.

Two Minutemen scored points in the 3,000m run. Junior Paolo Tavares was fourth with a time of 8 minutes, 29.16 seconds and classmate Jay McMahon took eighth in 8 minutes, 33.67 seconds.

UMass landed three in the top-eight in the high jump. Freshman Cole Acoveno led the way for the Minutemen in fifth, clearing a height of 6 feet, 6.25 inches. Horn placed sixth at 6 feet, 6.25 inches and Nick Ingham tied for eighth at 6 feet, 4.25 inches.

Junior Deion Arneaud captured sixth in the triple jump, leaping 45 feet, 7.00 inches and Brett Davies and Evan Burton provided points in the shot put, at sixth (47-00.75) and eighth (45-05.25), respectively.

Senior Zack Grube placed seventh in the 60 meter hurdles final with a time of 8.73 seconds and classmate Stephen Ness came in eighth in the 1,000m final, clocking in at 2 minutes, 35.55 seconds.

UMass' took sixth in the 4x400m relay and seventh in the 4x800m relay. Andrew Hanwell, Arneaud, Youssef El Korchi and Austin Rohlfing combined for a time of 3 minutes, 24.94 seconds. In the 4x800m relay, Michael McNaughton, Ness, Thomas and Groleau ran 7 minutes, 52.41 seconds.

The Minutemen will be back in action next Fri. and Sat., Feb. 26-27, when the squad will travel to the New England Championship at Boston University in Boston, Mass.
