NEW BRITAIN, Conn. - University of Massachusetts men's track and field opened up its 2016 outdoor season at the Central Connecticut Invitational on Saturday. First-place finishes by Benjamin Groleau, John Chuma and Deion Arneaud in their respective events helped lift the Minutemen to second out of eight teams with 201.50 points.

In 5,000 meter run, Groleau took home the gold with a time of 14 minutes, 45.85-seconds, scoring 10 points for UMass.

The Minutemen took the top three spots in pole vault, led by Chuma's leap of 14 feet, 5.25 inches. Brendan Lloyd took second at 13 feet, 11.25 inches and Nicholas Gemino earned third at 13 feet, 5.25 inches.

In long jump, Arneaud nabbed first place with a jump of 22 feet, 2.25 inches, while Connor Williams scored as well with a mark of 20 feet, 4.50 inches to land seventh.

UMass' 4x400 meter relay `A' team of Arneaud, Youssef Elkorchi, Cory Adelson, and Alexander Finestone claimed second with a time of 3 minutes, 28.95 seconds. Jonathan Collins, Jake DeGrace, Ari Silverfine and Dean Jenssen ran 3 minutes, 30.67-seconds as the `D' team to claim fourth.

In 800 meter run, the Minutemen landed three in the top-10. Stephen Ness claimed fourth place with a time of 1:56.62. Finestone was close behind in sixth place, finishing at 1 minute, 58.55-seconds. Silverfine rounded out the UMass scorers 10th place with a time of 1:58.94.

Morgan Marlow claimed seventh place in mile run, finishing at 4 minutes, 19.88-seconds.

In 3,000 meter steeplechase, Jay McMahon was runner up at 9 minutes, 24.91-seconds. Eric Waterman was fourth at 9:27.33 and John Burns took sixth at 9:41.75.

Adelson and Elkorchi finished in the top-10 of the 100 meter dash. Adelson claimed sixth at 11.45-seconds and Elkorchi was 8th at 11.50-seconds. The pair also took on the 200 meter dash. Adelson ran 23.19-seconds, good for seventh and Elkorchi claimed ninth at 23.36.

In 400 meter hurdles, DeGrace finished fifth at 58.75-seconds.

Evan Burton was runner-up in discus, placing second with a throw of 136 feet, 1 inch. Brett Davies was third at 135 feet, 10 inches. Burton and Davies also scored in shot put. Davies claimed fourth with a 45-foot, 8.50-inch toss and Burton was seventh with a mark of 42 feet.

In triple jump, Warren Charleston leapt 44 feet, 06.00 inches, good for third. Dana Pagliuca nabbed fourth at 44 feet, 03.25 inches.

John Long was third in javelin in his collegiate debut with a 183-foot, 10-inch throw.

The Minutemen are back in action next Fri. and Sat., Apr. 8-9. Friday the Minutemen compete at the Sam Howell Invitational in Princeton, N.J. and Saturday will be back in action for a tri-meet at home in Amherst.
