Second Half Run Leads Drexel Past Women’s Hoops, 65-47

December 28, 2016 | Women's Basketball

Dragons bridge 19-to-2 run over six minute stretch between third and fourth quarters.

MIAMI, Fla. – A 19-to-2 run spanning the third and fourth quarters proved the difference maker as Drexel defeated the UMass women's basketball team 65-47 on Wednesday afternoon at the FIU Holiday Classic.

UMass (6-8) will return to Atlantic 10 play on Saturday at Dayton with the non-conference schedule completed.

The Minutewomen were led on Wednesday by 19 points from Hailey Leidel who was 4-of-6 from beyond the arc. Maggie Mulligan added a double-double with 15 points and 10 rebounds – her 10th double-double of the season which leads the Atlantic 10 and among the best in the NCAA.

Drexel (9-2) was led by 20 points from Sarah Curran and 14 points by Jessica Pellechio. The duo combined for six of the Dragons' 12 three pointers.

Along with the deep ball, Drexel scored 22 points off 19 UMass turnovers and had 13 second chance points which aided the Dragons in pulling away from the Minutewomen in what had been a close game to start.

The first half saw Drexel take a 32-27 lead into the intermission after a back-and-forth start. Through the first two quarters of play, the game was tied four times with five lead changes.

The Dragons used six three pointers and a 9-to-4 edge in second chance points to build out its lead at the break. Kelsi Lidge hit a deep three-pointer at the buzzer that put Drexel up by five.

Mulligan scored 12 of her points in the first half thanks to an efficient 5-of-7 performance from the floor. Despite having an edge on the glass which helped negate Drexel's offense for much of the half, the Minutewomen did have seven turnovers which hampered their efforts to sustain a lead.

The second half broke open late after Drexel used a 19-to-run spanning the final 3:17 of the third and the first 2:52 of the fourth. The Dragons opened the fourth by scoring the first eight points of the stanza.

Leidel broke up the stretch with a three-point play with 6:47 to go and added her fourth three-pointer of the game three minutes later, but the damage had been done with Drexel putting the game out of reach.
