December 29, 2016 | Women's Basketball
Minutewomen begin full league portion of schedule starting Saturday afternoon.
AMHERST, Mass. - Coming off a pair of tough losses to FIU and Drexel at the FIU Holiday Classic, the UMass women's basketball team returns to Atlantic 10 play on Saturday at Dayton (2 p.m.).
The game, UMass' third in five days, will be streamed live on the Atlantic 10 Digital Network and will be carried locally by 91.1 FM WMUA.
At the FIU Holiday Classic, UMass dropped a one-point decision to host FIU on Tuesday before falling to Drexel on Wednesday thanks to a big second half for the Dragons. Hailey Leidel led the offense with an average of 18.5 points in the two games highlighted by 6-of-14 shooting from beyond the arc. Maggie Mulligan was named to the All-Tournament Team after averaging 12.5 points and 13 rebounds in the two games.
For the season, Leidel leads UMass in scoring with 16.8 points as the second leading freshman scorer in the NCAA and top in the Atlantic 10. Mulligan is just behind at 13.5 points and 12.4 rebounds per game. Ryan Holder rounds out the top scoring trio with 11.5 points a contest.
Mulligan is second in the NCAA and leads the A-10 in double doubles with 10, while her rebounding average leads the league and ranks second nationally. The junior center is one of the most improved players in the nation after seeing her scoring average jump nearly nine points and her rebouning average increase by nearly seven from a year ago.
Among the A-10 leaders, Leidel is third overall in scoring and leads the conference in three-pointers made (38). The rookie also ranks seventh in steals (1.9). Mulligan is 11th in scoring and third in blocked shots (2.1), while fellow junior Leah McDerment is third in the league for assists (5.1/game). Alongside Leidel, Holder is the second-leading rookie scorer in the league and 20th overall while also being 12th in blocked shots (1.2/game).
Dayton enters the main part of the Atlantic 10 season having won three of its last four after defeating Liberty on Wednesday night and then falling to Virginia on Thursday at the Cavalier Classic. Like UMass, the Flyers had an early A-10 match-up this year - a 54-51 loss at home to La Salle.
Jenna Burdette leads Dayton with a 12.7 point per game average followed by Kelley Austria as the only other Flyer in double figures. Saicha Grant-Allen rounds out the top scorers with 9.2 points a game and is second on the team with 7.3 rebounds. Four other players average better than six points an outing.
UMass will return home to host Rhode Island on Wednesday, Jan. 4 (7 p.m.) before heading back on the road to face Saint Joseph's on Saturday, Jan. 7 (2 p.m.).
