Minutewomen and Patriots meet for early A-10 opener

AMHERST, Mass. - It's an early Atlantic 10 opener on Sunday afternoon (1 p.m.) as the UMass women's basketball team hosts George Mason at the Mullins Center. The game will feature several promotional events including Girl Scout Day, National Cookie Day and a free sunglass give away. Fans who cannot make the game can watch live online for free through the Atlantic 10 Digital Network.

Though the game will be the A-10 opener for both games, non-conference action will resume following the meeting. League play will resume on Dec. 31 at Dayton for the Minutewomen (4-3 overall).

UMass is coming off a tough loss at Hartford on Wednesday night where the Hawks used a barrage of three-pointers to snap a three-game win streak for the Minutewomen. Hartford hit 14 treys on the night for a 75-56 win. Ryan Holder led the Minutewomen with 19 points, while Maggie Mulligan had her sixth straight double-double with 16 points and a career-best 17 rebounds. Hailey Leidel added 17 points, while Jessica George pulled down a career-high 13 rebounds.

Though one streak was snapped on Wednesday night, the Minutewomen are 3-0 this year at the Mullins Center and have won their last six straight home contests dating back to February of last season.

Nationally, Mulligan is in a three-way tie for first place in double-doubles this season with six and she also ranks sixth in the NCAA in rebounds per game (12.4). Leidel continues to lead UMass with a 17.0 point per game average which is fourth overall in the A-10. She is the top scoring rookie in the conference and the second-leading scorer in the nation behind UNC Greensboro's Nadine Soliman who is averaging 19.1 points in her rookie season.

In the A-10 rankings, Mulligan is just behind Leidel in fifth with 16.0 points per game, while also leading the league in rebounding and blocked shots (2.0/game). Leah McDerment continues to rank fourth overall in assists with 5.0 per night. Leidel rounds out the individual stats as she is tied for first in steals (2.6/game).

The loss at Hartford dropped UMass as the top scoring defense in the league to fifth overall giving up 57.7 points per night. The Minutewomen are allowing opponents to hit just 34 percent of their shots which is good for third-best in the A-10.

Kara Wright leads George Mason with 14.1 points per game as the only Patriot averaging double-figures. Jacy Bolton is just behind Wright with a 9.3 point per game average for Mason which as a team has scored just over 65 points a night. The Patriots enter the game with a 4-4 overall record following Wednesday's 55-54 win over Detroit Mercy. Mason had a 77-76 loss against Stephen F. Austin and a 79-75 loss at Towson last week in a pair of tight contests.
