Late Rally Gives Boston University 64-60 Win Over Women’s Basketball

December 14, 2016 | Women's Basketball

Terriers use 11-to-4 run in fourth quarter to spark rally.

BOSTON – An 11-to-4 run to open the fourth quarter proved the difference maker for Boston University as the Terriers slipped past the UMass women's basketball team 64-60 on Wednesday night at Case Gym. The Minutewomen led for the bulk of the first three quarters before BU was able to rally late in the game.

UMass falls to 5-6 overall, while the Terriers improve to 2-9 on the season. The Minutewomen will next host Holy Cross on Sunday afternoon (2 p.m.) at the Mullins Center. The game will feature a Holiday Party theme with free hot cocoa and cookies for fans.

Ryan Holder led UMass in the scoring column with 16 points and seven assists. Alyssa Lawrence was the only other Minutewoman in double-figures with 11 points in her first game back from injury this season. Maggie Mulligan led the rebounding effort with 15 boards.

Boston University was led by a pair of 16-point efforts by Sarah Hope and Meghan Green. Payton Hauck added 10 points off the bench.

UMass led 11-6 after the first quarter thanks in part to force eight Terrier turnovers. The Minutewomen closed the opening stanza on a 7-to-0 run highlighted by a Hailey Leidel three-pointer with 25 seconds left on the clock.

The second quarter saw UMass extend its run to 12 straight points thanks to a Holder lay-up and another trey from Leidel. Holder scored 10 of her 11 first half points in the second quarter sparking the Minutewomen to a 28-19 lead at the intermission.

The Terriers started the third quarter outscoring UMass 12-to-6 to pull within three, 34-31, after a Green three-pointer with 5:49 to go. The Terriers were able to stay within four until a three-point play from Lawrence gave the Minutewomen some breathing room with a 40-33 lead at the 3:32 mark. Overall in the third, UMass was able to do the bulk of its scoring at the charity stripe hitting 13 free throws in the stanza.

The fourth quarter started with a pair of Hauk lay-ups to pull BU within two, 47-45, within the first minute of play. That sparked an 11-to-4 run which gave the Terriers a 52-51 lead with 6:57 to go.

The Minutewomen re-took the lead, 54-52, on a Stiff three-pointer with 5:38 remaining after seven straight Terrier points.

The teams traded leads twice before Hope's fourth three-pointer of the night tied the game 58 each with 2:46 remaining.

The Terriers then took a three-point lead following a Naiyah Thompson lay-up and a Green free throw. UMass cut the lead back to a point after two Lawrence free throws with 34 seconds to go. The Minutewomen were unable to pull any closer after that with BU hitting three more free throws and forcing a pair of missed field goals for UMass.
