Princeton Rallies Past Hockey, 4-3

THE BASICS:
RESULT: Princeton 4, UMass 3
LOCATION: Hobey Baker Rink (Princeton, N.J.)
RECORDS: Massachusetts (4-10-2); Princeton (6-7-1)
THE LEAD: Freshman Ryan Wischow made a career high 52 saves, but the University of Massachusetts hockey program fell at Princeton on Tuesday night by a 4-3 margin. The Minutemen led 3-1 early in the third period before the Tigers rallied to score three unanswered over the final 14 minutes of the contest.
FIRST PERIOD:
The first period featured a combined 30 shots on goal and numerous chances for both sides, but the teams headed to the locker room deadlocked at 0-0. UMass was 0-1 on the power play in the frame, while Princeton was 0-for-2.
SECOND PERIOD:
The Minutemen opened the scoring 1:24 into the second as freshman Jack Suter took a pass from sophomore Kurt Keats and set up Jonny Lazarus on a 2-on-1. Just 59 seconds later, junior Dominic Trento knocked in his first of the season from the top of crease off a feed from Joseph Widmar and Riley McDougall. At the 16:35 mark, the Tigers halved their deficit as Ben Foster redirected a shot from the point by Quin Pompi past Wischow.
THIRD PERIOD:
Keats took a pass from Lazarus along the boards and buried it on the rush 1:56 into the final frame to push the UMass advantage to 3-1. However, Princeton began its rally with a goal from Eric Robinson on a breakaway at the 6:18 mark. Just over a minute later, the Tigers tied the score at 3-3 as Jackson Cressey found Liam Grande open at the back door to put the puck into an open net. Alex Riche then gave Princton the lead 14:34 into the stanza, finishing off a feed from Max Veronneau and Pompi.

UP NEXT: UMass will play host to Arizona State for the first time, hosting the Sun Devils this Friday and Saturday, Dec. 16-17, at the Mullins Center.

- Wischow's 52 saves marked the most stops for a UMass netminder in a regulation length game since Mike Johnson turned aside 60 shots vs. Boston College in 2001.
- Lazarus finished with goal and an assist for his second multi-point game of the season. He is now tied for the team lead in freshman scoring with eight points on four goals and four assists.
- Keats logged a goal and an assist for his second career multi-point game and first of the season. His goal was his fourth of the year, matching his freshman year total of four in 35 games played.
- Widmar's assist was his first point of the 2016-17 campaign and Trento's goal was his first of the year.
- The Minutemen were 0-for-3 on the power play on the night, while Princeton was 0-for-4.
