AMHERST, Mass. - The Tory Verdi era officially kicks off on Friday night as the UMass women's basketball team heads to Buffalo to open the 2016-17 season. The game will be streamed live on ESPN3 and the WatchESPN app.

The Minutewomen are coming off a 76-27 exhibition win over UMass Dartmouth last Thursday night. Freshman Hailey Liedel scored a game-high 27 points while junior co-captain Maggie Mulligan added a double-double with 21 points and 24 rebounds. Freshman Ryan Holder rounded out the top scorers with 18 points.

UMass is coming off a 12-18 season a year ago which saw the Minutewomen reach the second round of the Atlantic 10 Championship Tournament.

Verdi, who was announced as the new head coach in April, will begin his inaugural season with a young roster featuring just one senior in guard Alyx Stiff. Alongside Mulligan, junior Leah McDerment will also serve as co-captain this year. In the early goings of the season, McDerment and Mulligan are expected to be joined by three other first-time starters. Liedel and Holder earned the starting nod in the exhibition with the Corsairs alongside sophomore guard Jessica George.

Buffalo defeated Bloomsburg in its exhibition game 65-45 last Friday night. Senior JoAnna Smith led the Bulls with 14 points, while Mariah Suchan had nine points and five rebounds off the bench. All but one player for Buffalo scored in the game.

Last season, the Bulls earned a 56-48 win over the Minutewomen in the Mullins Center. Smith led Buffalo with 21 points including a late three-pointer in the fourth quarter that held off an 11-to-2 run by UMass to close the gap to five-points.

Following the trip to Buffalo, UMass will have a quick turn-around with North Dakota State visiting the Mullins Center on Monday night for the Minutewomen's home opener. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. and tickets can be purchased in advance or at the Mullins Center Box Office. Fans can visit UMassAthletics.com for complete ticket information or call 866-UMASS-TIX.
