Becerra Named Atlantic 10 Men's Soccer Defensive Player of the Week

AMHERST, Mass. - After earning his sixth shutout of the season, UMass men's soccer goalkeeper Jorge Becerra has been named the Atlantic 10 Defensive Player of the Week. The senior anchored the Minutemen to a 1-0 win over George Washington on Saturday moving the Minutemen into sixth-place in the Atlantic 10 standings heading into the final week of the regular season.

Though he was pressed into making just one save, Becerra kept the defense organized throughout Saturday's match as the Minutemen posted their first-ever season keeping A-10 opponents scoreless in home league matches.

The win extends UMass' late season surge where the Minutemen have gone 6-2-2 over the last 10 matches. That has improved the overall record to 6-7-3 and 3-1-2 in league play. In league play, Becerra is the top rated keeper ranking first in goals-against-average (0.46), save percentage (0.870) and shutouts (4).

The Minutemen will play two matches this week to close out the regular season. On Wednesday, UMass heads to Fordham to play a match that was postponed due to weather earlier this season. The regular-season finale will be on Saturday at La Salle.
