AMHERST, Mass. - UMass women's swimming and diving head coach Bob Newcomb has announced the addition of Maiya Otsuka as the program's new assistant coach. Otsuka joins the Minutewomen after working at Texas A&M and Connecticut the last three seasons.
"We are very excited to have Maiya joining us this year," said Newcomb. "She brings with her a good deal of experience at the top level of Division I swimming. Her competitive background and on-deck exposure will be an asset to the future of the UMass women's program."
Otsuka served as an intern assistant coach with the Huskies last fall after a two-year stint as a volunteer assistant coach with Texas A&M. She also served as a fifth-year assistant coach for her alma mater, Utah, after finishing her competitive career with the Utes.
In addition to her collegiate coaching experience, Otsuka also has worked at the club and high school levels with youth ranging from four years to 18 years of age.
The native of Littleton, Colo., was a two-time team captain at Utah where she holds school records in the 200 breaststroke, the 400 individual medley and the 400 medley relay. She was an All-Mountain West performer in each season with the Utes and was a MWC Scholar-Athlete during the 2008-09 season.
Otsuka earned her master's degree in sports pedagogy from Texas A&M following her undergraduate career at Utah.
The UMass women's swimming and diving program enters the upcoming season after finishing second at the Atlantic 10 Championships last February. The Minutewomen have placed second at the league championships in two of the last three years and have finished no lower than fourth since 2004. Newcomb's squad returns a veteran-laden group headlined by 10 seniors and seven juniors.
