NEW BRITAIN, Conn. - Behind a complete game four-hit shutout by redshirt junior Tim Cassidy, the UMass baseball team rolled to a 6-0 victory on the road at Central Connecticut on Tuesday afternoon. Following the win, the fourth straight for the Minutemen, the squad is now 10-11 on the season while the Blue Devils fall to 10-16.
After going down in order in the first two innings, the UMass bats came alive in the top of third. Sophomore Dylan Morris and junior Vinny Scifo opened up the frame with back-to-back singles before senior Paul Yanakopulos advanced the pair with a sacrifice bunt. With Morris and Scifo in scoring position, sophomore Bryce Maher drove a ball through the right side of the infield to give the Minutemen a 2-0 lead.
UMass added its third run in the top of the fourth as junior Brandon Walsh reached with a leadoff single to center, was sacrificed over to second and came home on a two-out single to left center by Yanakopulos.
The Minutemen then capped off the scoring in the top of the seventh. Scifo singled to right, stole second and scored on a one-out single by Maher. Maher crossed the plate on a single through the left side by redshirt senior Rob McLam with two down and Picard singled to third to bring in McLam for the team's sixth and final run.
Cassidy scattered four hits in the contest, all singles, walked one and struck out three en route to the win (1-1). He threw just 104 pitches over nine innings on the mound. Starter Michael Pastore took the loss (1-1) for the Blue Devils as he surrendered two runs on four hits and walked one over three innings of work.
UMass pounded out 13 hits on the day, paced by a 3-for-5 effort from Maher with three RBI and one run scored. Sophomore Mike Geannelis (2-for-4), Scifo (2-for-4) and Yanakopulos (2-for-3) all had multi-hit performances, as well.
The Minutemen are back in action tomorrow afternoon, Apr. 15, playing host to Hartford at 3 p.m. at Earl Lorden Field.
