AMHERST, Mass. -- University of Massachusetts football fell to Miami (Ohio), 20-13, Saturday, at McGuirk Stadium. Freshman running back Marquis Young has UMass' lone touchdown of the day while Mike Caggiano and Logan Laurent chipped in with field goals.
Quarterback Blake Frohnapfel finished the game 17-of-34 for 181 yards. Young was UMass' leader on the ground with 77 yards on 13 carries. Senior Tajae Sharpe finished with six catches and 81 yards. Shane Huber (11), Da'Sean Downey (11) and Jovan Santos-Knox paced the Massachusetts defense.
Caggiano made his second appearance of the season and hit a 19-yard field goal to put the Minutemen on the board first. With his first career field-goal attempt, he gave UMass a 3-0 lead at the 7:17 mark of the first quarter.
Redshirt sophomore Logan Laurent kicked a 45-yard field goal at the 7:36 mark of the second quarter to give UMass a 6-0 lead over the RedHawks. Miami (Ohio) answered back in the second quarter with a 48-yard field goal by Kaleb Patterson.
Miami (Ohio) scored the first touchdown of the game at the 10:53 mark of the third quarter. Redshirt freshman Alonzo Smith rushed for an 18-yard score and the good PAT gave Miami (Ohio) a 10-6 lead.
The Minutemen forced a turnover in the third quarter, thanks to a Trey Dudley-Giles forced fumble and a Peter Angeh fumble recovery. Young punched a 28-yard run into the endzone on the ensuing drive to give UMass a 13-10 lead.
The RedHawks scored 10 unanswered points in the fourth quarter to clinch the victory. Patterson hit a 28-yard field goal to tie the game at 13 and Billy Bahl threw a 14-yard touchdown pass to Chris Hudson for the go-ahead score.
Bahl finished 12 of 23 for 160 yards. Smith ended the day with 109 yards on 26 carries. Rokeem Williams was the RedHawks top receiver with six catches for 79 yards.
The Minutemen will close out the 2015 season at Buffalo on Fri., Nov. 27. Kick is scheduled for 4:30 p.m. ET and will air on ESPNU.
