Swimming Heads To Terrier Invite; Diving To Tennessee Invitational

AMHERST, Mass. - Closing out the fall portion of the 2015-16 schedule, the UMass swimming and diving teams will compete at a pair of three-day invitationals beginning Friday, Nov. 20 through Sunday, Nov. 22. The men’s and women’s swim teams will take part in the Boston University Terrier Invitational, while the diving squads head to the Tennessee Invitational in Knoxville.

Both the swimmers and divers expect to close the fall portion of their training cycle on strong notes with the weekend before the winter break where the focus shifts to preparing for the Atlantic 10 Championships in February.

The women’s swim team continues to be led by the quintet of Cassie Sosnovich, Steph Campo, Rebecca Quirie, Jocelyn Yuen and Meriza Werenski. Sosnovich ranks seventh among Atlantic 10 swimmers in the 50 free (24.38 seconds), while Campo and Werenski rank fourth (10:33.40) and fifth (10:35.75), respectively, in the 1,000 free. Campo also ranks eighth in the 1,650 free (17:57.20) leading the distance group.

Quirie currently has the sixth fastest time in the A-10 in the 100 back (58.98), while Sosnovich also has the fifth fastest mark in the 100 fly (58.14). Yuen enters the weekend with the second fastest time in the 100 individual medley (1:00.31), while Werenski holds the eighth-best performance in the 200 IM (2:10.39) and the fourth-fastest time in the 400 IM (4:34.95) so far this season.

The divers continue to be led by the trio of Emma Roush, Julia Jagannath and Katie Polk. Roush turned in her best 3-meter dive of the year against Brown (257.48), while posting a high mark of 266.55 in the 1-meter dive.

Jagannath has posted season-high marks in each of the last two meets with a season-best 251.48 point showing on the three-meter board against Brown along with a 236.92 effort on the one-meter board. Polk also turned in her best dives last week against Brown with 260.55 points in the three-meter and 248.78 points in the one-meter.

The men’s swim team continues to be led by Owen Wright, Oliver Wyeth and Alessandro Bomprezzi.

Wright holds the top time in the Atlantic 10 in the 50 free (20.69), is third in the 100 free (45.70) and third in the 200 free (1:41.60).

Wiktor Karpinski and Brian Stiles rank eighth and ninth, respectively in the 50 free, while Stiles is also seventh in the 100 free (46.87).

The distance free squad is led by Alessandro Bomprezzi who ranks fourth in the 500 free, second in the 1,000 free and fifth in the 1,650 free among Atlantic 10 swimmers.

Wyeth leads the league in the 100 back (49.42) and 200 back (1:49.14) and is second as well in 500 free.

Also among the top five for UMass in the 200 back is Heath Maginn who also holds the fifth fastest time in the 400 individual medley, while Alex Mesisca ranks second in the 100 breast.

Trent Kindvall and Nolan Burns continue to lead the divers. Burns holds top marks of 339.98 points on the 3-meter board and 276.15 on the 1-meter board this year. Burns has come on strong over the last few weeks with season-bests of 277.65 on the 3-meter board and 245.78 on the 1-meter last week at Brown.

Following this weekend’s action, both squads will be off from competition until January 16 at Bryant.
