The UMass men's soccer program will host a pair of key Atlantic 10 matches at Rudd Field this week against Rhode Island on Wednesday, Oct. 7 (4 PM) and Saint Louis on Saturday, Oct. 10 (1 PM). Prior to Saturday's match against the Billikens, the Minutemen will hold a special pregame ceremony to dedicate a memorial plaque to iconic head coach Sam Koch who passed away in July 2014.
UMass (1-10-0, 0-1-0 A-10) is coming off a 2-0 loss at Saint Joseph's this past Saturday in Philadelphia to open up league play. The Hawks tallied goals in each half to hold serve on their home pitch.
The Minutemen were able to match Saint Joseph's with 12 shots and held a 9-to-4 advantage in corners, but were unable to convert any attempts.
Ty Goncalves (Norwood, Mass.) and Alex DeSantis continue to lead UMass with three points each. Goncalves has a goal and an assist, while DeSantis leads the team with three assists.
In goal, Bardia Asefnia has seen the bulk of the action with eight starts, while Jorge Becerra has had three starts including the game at Saint Joseph's.
Rhode Island enters the mid-week tilt with a 5-4-2 overall record. Last Saturday, the Rams hosted Saint Louis with the two sides ending in a 1-1 double-overtime draw. It marked the second straight draw for URI as the Rams also played No. 22 Boston College to a 1-1 tie last Tuesday as well.
Saint Louis visits Rudd Field on Saturday with a 4-3-1 overall mark and a 0-0-1 record in league play. Prior to Saturday's draw with the Rams, the Billikens fell to rival Indiana 3-2 in double overtime at home last Wednesday.
In the Atlantic 10 standings, Dayton, Fordham, George Washington and Saint Joseph's all tallied opening weekend wins. Four teams played to draws, while four others fell. The only team to not see action was St. Bonaventure.
