Hilliard & Schwartz Named UMass Fall Scholar-Athletes

AMHERST, Mass. - Senior Rachel Hilliard of the women's cross country team and senior Josh Schwartz of the men's soccer team have been named the female and male UMass Fall Scholar-Athletes for 2014. The duo will be honored at the UMass Sports Luncheon on Wednesday, Dec. 2, in the Massachusetts Room in the Mullins Center.
Hilliard, who is a double major in Biology and English and holds a 3.991 cumulative grade-point average, finished seventh overall and first on the team at the Atlantic 10 Cross Country Championships. She completed the course in 18:01.6 to collect her first all-conference accolade of her career and was named to the Atlantic 10 Academic All-Conference Team, as well.
In her final cross country campaign as a member of the Minutewomen this fall, Hilliard was UMass' top finisher in all five meets she competed in. She was tabbed the Atlantic 10 Performer of the Week on Sept. 16 after placing fifth out of 125 competitors at the Minuteman Invitational. She also earned her second UMass Athlete of the Week recognition of the season on Oct. 14 after placing fifth out of a field of 262 runners at the New England Championship.
Schwartz has been the epitome of a student-athlete, earning multiple academic and athletic honors during his UMass career. He is a two-time College Sports Information Directors of America Academic All-America honoree, a three-time Academic All-District choice and a two-time Atlantic 10 All-Academic selection.
He carries a 3.96 grade-point average in biology and was the 2013 UMass Fall Scholar-Athlete, who has been named to the A-10 Commissioner's Academic Honor Roll every semester since his freshman year.
Schwartz led the Minutemen in scoring and goals for the past three seasons and finished his career with 18 goals, 11 assists and 47 points. He also had three game-winning goals in his 74 games.
