CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - Trey Davis had a good look at a potential game-winning 3-pointer as time expired but it caromed off two parts of the rim as Massachusetts fell to Harvard 75-73 at Lavietes Pavilion Saturday.
The atmosphere felt like an NCAA Tournament contest with each team answering the other throughout the game. But Harvard broke a 71-71 tie with 40.3 seconds left when Wesley Saunders converted a 3-point play in the lane to put the Crimson ahead for good.
Derrick Gordon drove to the basket on the ensuing possession and cut it to 74-73 with 23.9 to play.
The Minutemen fouled Chambers with 15.2 seconds remaining where he missed the front-end of the one-and-one. UMass came down and Gordon again attacked the basket only to have his shot fall off the front of the rim where Saunders was fouled with 2.0 left.
Saunders made the second attempt, setting up the final play. Cady Lalanne in-bounds throw to Maxie Esho was perfect, who turned and passes to Davis for the shot from the left wing.
UMass (5-2) shot 48 percent and made four 4-pointers. They were also 19-for-28 from the foul line and held a 33-32 edge on the glass.
Davis had 13 and Lalanne finished with his fifth double-double of 13 points and 13 rebounds. He also blocked two shots. Esho and Gordon finished with 12 each.
Harvard (4-1) was led by Saunders who had 27 in 38 minutes.
UMass led 38-32 at the half after closing the period on a 6-2 run which included a Donte Clark 3-pointer with time running out. Clark finished with nine points off the bench and was 6-of-8 from the line.
UMass will return to action on Tuesday night when it travels to LSU. The contest will begin at 7 p.m. Eastern time and be televised on the SEC Network.
