UMass Women's Soccer Edged By URI, 1-0

KINGSTON, R.I. - The UMass women's soccer team put eight shots on target, but Rhode Island scored the lone goal of the match in the 16th minute to edge the Minutewomen, 1-0, on Saturday night at the URI soccer complex. Following the loss, UMass sits at 3-7-4 on the year, 1-2-1 in the Atlantic 10, while the Rams improve to 10-2-2 overall and 2-1-1 in conference action.
Rhode Island's tally came at the 15:57 mark as Simone Hansen headed in a corner kick from Nicole Brennan for her third goal of the season.
The Minutewomen had an opportunity to net the equalizer with the second half just under way, but sophomore Daniela Alvarez's shot from outside the 18-yard box was turned aside by Katie Nickles. Alvarez logged a team-high four shots for UMass, while Madison Smith, who provided the Minutewomen's other quality chance on the evening, put two of her three shot attempts on frame.
Rhode Island finished with a narrow 16-15 shot advantage and led in corner kicks, 8-3. Cassidy Babin made four saves in net for the Minutewomen and Nickles totaled eight stops in the shutout for URI. Fouls were even at five apiece.
UMass will return to action in Amherst next weekend, Oct. 24 and 26, playing host to St. Bonaventure and Duquesne in its final two home games of the 2014 campaign.
