October 19, 2014 | Men's Swimming & Diving
AMHERST, Mass. -- The Massachusetts men's swimming & diving got some nice performances from a number of student-athletes but lost its season-opener to Army, 172-128 at Joseph R. Rogers, Jr. Pool in Boyden Gym on Saturday.
Junior Alessandro Bomprezzi and senior Michael Glenn provided some impressive swims in the pool, while freshman diver Trent Kindvall claimed a gold and silver in his first collegiate performance to lead the Minutemen.
Bomprezzi, already the school record holder in the three distance freestyle events, opened the year with a 9:31.70 in the 1000 free - his second-fastest at that distance in his career. Just over five minutes later, he was back in the pool for the 200 free where he touched second in 1:42.49, just 2-tenths out of first. He added the 500 free title later in the meet in 4:36.44, more than seven seconds ahead of his nearest competitor.
Glenn won gold in the 100 breast, silver in the 200 breast and bronze in the 200 individual medley for a 15-point day.
The diving trio of Kindvall, sophomore Robert Barry and freshman James Albanese were all very competitive in both springboard events. They combined for top four finishes in the 1- and 3-meter on Saturday.
Barry opened the morning portion of the meet with a career-high 244.20 on the low board, just ahead of Kindvall in second at 243.37 and Albanese in fourth at 224.92.
Later in the day, it was Kindvall's turn to collect the top scores from the judges, posting a 44-point win in the 3-meter with a 271.81 total. Albanese took third and Barry was fourth.
New Zealand freshman Oliver Wyeth won his first college race, clocking in at 50.75 in the 100 back, just ahead of school record holder senior Hao Luong at 51.56. That was the first of three runner-up finishes for Luong on the day, who also claimed silver in the 200 back and 100 fly.
Freshman Owen Wright had a solid debut in the sprints, recording second in the 100 free, third in the 50 free, sixth in the 200 free and a strong leadoff leg in the 400 free relay.
Junior freestyler Wiktor Karpinski out of Wilbraham, Mass., scored in the 50 and 100 free races with a second and third, respectively.
UMass will return to action at Boston University next Saturday, Oct. 25 at 1:00 p.m.
