BURLINGTON, Vt. - New Hampshire freshman Christopher Wingate scored on a header in the first half to give the Wildcats a 1-0 win over Massachusetts at the Windjammer Classic on Friday afternoon.
Coming off a goal kick that bounced high off the artificial surface at Virtue Field on the Vermont Campus, Aaron Smith passed the ball to Wingate, who slipped past a UMass defender at the 18 and beat goalkeeper Nick Ruiz to the loose ball for the game winner. The score came at the 18:45 mark of the game.
UMass (0-2-1) was unable to score and managed six shots as it dropped its second-consecutive one-goal outcome. Matt Bolduc led the Minutemen with a game-high-tying two shots.
Ruiz made seven saves, while his counterpart Giovani Riello stopped all three shots on goal in his first career start.
UNH (2-1-0) took 15 shots in the match.
UMass will return to action on Sunday when it faces tourney host Vermont at 1:30 p.m. Free live video is available via links at UMassAthletics.com.
