BOSTON - An early goal from freshman Jackie Bruno and seven saves by senior Emily Cota helped the UMass women's soccer team down Boston University, 1-0, at Nickerson Field on Friday night. The victory marked the first time that the Minutewomen (3-4) have defeated the Terriers (3-5-1) in consecutive meetings in the history of the series between the squads.
Just 6:54 into the contest, Bruno collected a ball played in behind BU's back line. Capitalizing on a miscue between the Terriers' defenders and netminder Andrea Green, Bruno notched her first collegiate tally in her first career start.
That was all the offense the Minutewomen would need. In her 2012 debut, Cota turned aside seven shots, including a stellar leaping stop in the 71st minute to touch the ball over the crossbar. The shutout was Cota's 17th of her UMass career.
BU finished the match with a 12-4 shot advantage and led in corner kicks, 10-0. Three of the Minutewomen's four attempts at goal were on target as Green finished the night with two saves. Fouls were 10-4, against UMass.
After three straight on the road, the Minutewomen return home for their next contest, this Sunday, Sept. 16, against New Hampshire. Game time is set for 1 p.m. on Rudd Field.
