UMass Downs UNH, 2-0, For Second Straight Win

AMHERST, Mass. - The UMass women's soccer team celebrated its return to Rudd Field with a 2-0 victory over New Hampshire on Sunday afternoon, the squad's second consecutive win via shutout. Coming off a 1-0 blanking of Boston University on Friday night to end a string of three straight road matches, the Minutewomen level their record at 4-4-0, while the Wildcats drop to 1-6-1 on the year.
In an up tempo first half, UMass totaled nine shots to UNH's seven, but neither side managed to find the back of the net. The Wildcats were able to place five on target, but the majority were long-range attempts.
After several near misses coming out of the intermission, the Minutewomen broke up the deadlock in the 77th minute. Junior Hlín Gunnlaugsdottír sent a cross from the right of the 18-yard box in to sophomore Tori Sousa. Sousa managed to knock the ball down for classmate Moa Mattsson, who drove it past Erica Correa from about 10 yards out for her fourth of the season.
Just over five minutes later, Mattsson set up Gunnlaugsdottír's first career tally as a quick touch from Mattsson found Gunnlaugsdottír on the wing. Gunnlaugsdottír took a few steps towards goal and sent a low shot in along the ground that tucked inside the far right post at 81:49.
Senior Emily Cota collected her second straight shutout for UMass and made seven saves, including a spectacular diving stop in the 80th minute that prevented a UNH equalizer. Correa finished with four saves for the Wildcats, who were-out shot 19-9 on the afternoon. Corner kicks were even at five apiece, while fouls were 11-4 against the Minutewomen.
UMass will return to action on Thursday as the squad will travel to Brown for its final non-conference road match of the regular season. Game time against the Bears is set for 7 p.m.
