AMHERST, Mass. -- Sophomore Josh Schwartz's header in the 78th minute gave Massachusetts the lead and senior Brian Frame made some clutch saves down the stretch as the Minutemen defeated Vermont, 1-0, at Rudd Field Monday.
UMass improved to 2-0 while Vermont moved to 1-1 on the young season.
Neither team seemed to be able to capitalize on much at either end of the field until the action heated up over the final 15 minutes.
Sophomore Rob Sena took a ball down the sideline and sent a cross in front of the goal where Schwartz headed the ball into the goal and break the scoreless tie. It was both players' first goal and assist of the season.
UMass had a couple of scoring chances but was unable to add to its lead.
Vermont saw a couple of its best chances come in the final five minutes. D.J. Edler headed a ball off a corner kick that Frame punched over the goal before Noah Johnson put a ball on goal that sailed just wide in the final minute.
Frame finished with four saves while posting his second-consecutive shutout.
The Catamounts outshot the Minutemen 14-9 and held a 9-6 edge in corner kicks. Both teams committed 13 fouls in the match.
UMass will wrap-up its homestand on Friday as part of a doubleheader with the women's team. Both teams will play host to Harvard, with the women's game kicking off at 1:30 p.m. and the men following at 4:00 p.m. Admission is free to both contests.
