DURHAM, N.H. - For the second time in as many days, junior Hannah Prince scored in overtime to lift the UMass field hockey team to a win over a ranked opponent, a 2-1 victory over #15 Ohio State in Durham, N.H. The Minutewomen are now 2-0 to start the season, while the Buckeyes fall to 0-1.
Senior Thando Zono missed wide on a penalty stroke in the 14th minute, but went on to put UMass on the board just before the opening half came to a close. At the 31:46 mark, Zono converted on a penalty corner, sending her shot from Callie Sweigart and Prince into the right corner of the cage, giving the Minutewomen a 1-0 lead.
Danica Deckard did the same for Ohio State, though. After her penalty stroke hit the post in the 53rd minute, she notched the equalizer that forced the extra period. At the 60:22 mark, Deckhard's shot from the right wing deflected off a UMass defender and found its way past freshman Sam Carlino.
Then just 1:38 into overtime, Prince buried a rebound into the open left side after a shot by Zono off a penalty corner was saved by Emma Voelker. The tally was her second of her career and of the weekend.
The Buckeyes finished with a slight shot advantage at 14-12 and led in penalty corners, 9-5. Voelker made six saves for Ohio State, while Carlino had three for the Minutewomen.
UMass will be back in action on Friday, Aug. 31, when the squad will play host to Dartmouth in the 2012 home opener at 6 p.m. on Garber Field.
