AMHERST, Mass. - In its first contest of the season on Garber Field, the University of Massachusetts dropped a 3-1 decision to the visiting Dartmouth Big Green on Friday evening. Senior midfielder Kim Young notched the lone UMass goal of the game while junior midfielder Alexa Sikalis and senior midfielder Kate Heineman each tallied an assist.

Dartmouth (1-0 overall) opened scoring 95 seconds into the contest to stake the Big Green to an early advantage. Dart Masini tallied the goal for Dartmouth following a pass deflection by UMass, with Olivia Quaglia earning an assist on the play. Shortly after halftime, Masini doubled the Big Green's lead at the 43:56 mark, knocking home an attempt from the top of the circle during a penalty corner.

Young answered immediately for Massachusetts with her second goal of the season to cut the deficit in half. Using a penalty corner to create the mark, Heineman centered a pass to Sikalis at the top of the circle before Young drilled a shot by Dartmouth's goalkeeper, Ellen Meyer, 46:26 into the game.

UMass threatened for the tying goal on its next attacking run, as Young fired an attempt off the goal post at the 47:55 mark as the Minutewomen secured a 12-9 advantage in shots over the contest.

Dartmouth capped scoring on the contest with 11:43 remaining to play. Big Green midfielder Brooke Van Valkenburg tipped in a pass from the left side of the circle to create the 3-1 final.

On the game, Dartmouth recorded 10 penalty corners - all coming in the second half - to seven for the Maroon and White. The Big Green also led in saves, with starting goalkeeper Jenna Stearns and Meyer, who entered for the second half, recording three apiece. Freshman Sam Carlino stopped two shots in net for Massachusetts.

The Minutewomen (2-1) continue their challenging schedule with a Sunday, Sept. 2 contest in Chestnut Hill, Mass., at No. 17 Boston College, the third ranked opponent in four contests on the 2012 campaign.
