Two Medals For Rowing At Murphy Cup

CAMDEN, N.J. - The UMass rowing team met success at the Murphy Cup on Saturday, their first regatta of the season. The Minutewomen brought home two medals, a gold and a bronze in the Varsity 4+ and the Lightweight 8+, respectively.

The Varsity 4+ was coxswained by freshman Isabel Feldman and was stroked by fellow freshmen Arielle Gillette and Emily Sgarlat, along with sophomore Hannah Monahan and junior Adrienne Breef-Pilz. The boat placed first in both their heat (9:29.30) and in the final (8:50.75) to bring home the gold medal.

The Lightweight 8+ placed third in the final with a time of 8:53.05, which got them a bronze medal on the day. The boat was led by coxswain Emily Hajjar and the stroke was led by Nicole Juul-Hindsgaul.

Also meeting some success was the Varsity 8+, who finished first in their heat with a time of 8:25.23 and advanced to the finals where they finished in fifth place with a time of 7:59.15 behind Navy, SUNY Buffalo, and Atlantic 10 rivals George Washington and Saint Joseph's. The boat was lead by coxswain Heather Pekarovich, the stroke was led by Kaitlin MacKenzie.

The Junior Varsity 8+ also raced, finishing fourth in their heat with a time of 8:41.56 but were not able to make it to the final race.

The Minutewomen race again next Saturday, March 31 at the Yankee Cup in Kingston, R.I.
