AMHERST, Mass. - Former Minuteman second baseman Eric Fredette, has returned to the UMass baseball program as an assistant coach, head coach Mike Stone announced on Friday. Fredette, a 2011 UMass graduate, joins Stone's staff for the 2012 campaign.
"We are very happy to add Eric to our staff this spring," said Stone. "He did everything the right way and got the most out of his ability as a player. Now as a member of the coaching staff, he continue to help lead and set a great example for our players. His work ethic and positive attitude as a player were an inspiration. With these credentials behind him, he will be a positive addition to our staff."
Fredette, who transferred to UMass from Vermont after the Catamounts' baseball program was discontinued in 2009, played two seasons with the Minutemen for a total of 92 games with 92 starts. As a junior in 2010, he led UMass with a .384 batting average, going 71-for-185 to post the 10th-highest hits total for a single season in program history. Following that stellar campaign that saw Fredette total 31 RBI, 32 runs scored and 11 doubles, he was named to the All-Atlantic 10 Second team and earned the team's E. Joseph Thompson Most Valuable Player Award.
As a senior, Fredette served as a team captain in 2010 and started all 47 games. He finished his two seasons with the Minutemen with a .320 career batting average, with 46 RBI and 55 runs scored, 15 doubles, one triple and four home runs.
UMass opens its season one week from today on Mar. 9, at Central Florida.
