Swimming & Diving Teams' Annual Banquet Held

AMHERST, Mass. - The UMass men's and women's swimming and diving teams celebrated their very successful 2010-11 seasons on Saturday with the annual banquet and awards night at the Campus Center. The men won their 13th Atlantic 10 Championship and fifth in a row, and the women finished third in conference for back-to-back seasons.
Women's Coach Bob Newcomb handed out five individual awards, listed below. He also used the opportunity to recognize Tavis Potter and Jessica Starosielec for being named to the Atlantic 10 Academic All-Conference Team.
Senior team members Gillian Bank, Jennifer Corriveau, Kaitie English, Meghan Nowak, Potter, and Starosielec were recognized for their contributions to the program during their careers in which they finished in the top four in the conference each season.
Men's Coach Russ Yarworth handed out eight individual awards, also listed below. In addition, Dan Backler and Alexander Merkulov were recognized for being named to the Atlantic 10 Academic All-Conference Team and Adam Duffield was honored for being the Atlantic 10 Student-Athlete of the Year.
Seniors Backler, Max Butler, John Clark, Duffield, Chris Howard, Brian Schmidt, and Trevor Ziegler were recognized for their contributions in their careers in which they won four A-10 titles.
Yarworth also announced that next season Conor Dunn, Kyle Jennings, and Joey Sbordon will serve as team captains.
All team members, coaches, and managers received an adidas award jacket as recognition of their accomplishments.
