Swimming And Diving Takes The Split At Fordham

AMHERST, Mass. - The UMass men's and women's swimming and diving teams split with Fordham today in their final dual-meet of the 2010-11 season. The Minutemen, who were tabbed to win the Atlantic 10, took the victory beating the Rams, 171-127. The women put up battle against a Fordham team also picked to win the Atlantic 10, but came out on the wrong end, losing 183-111.
The men started the day strong with a win in the 200-yard medley relay by Trevor Ziegler, Peter Sacco, Christopher Howard and Timmy O'Neill with a time of 1:34.63. Howard continued to have a good day in the pool winning both the 50 and 100-yard freestyles touching the wall with times of 21.33 and 46.96, respectively. He also assisted the 200-yard freestyle relay team to a second place finish (1:26.90).
Beau Garufi's success from a week ago carried over to this week, as he was able to take first in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:10.48) and second in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:00.74). Chris Inglis also continued his recent success, taking first in the both the 200-yard butterfly (1:55.95) and the 200-yard IM (1:59.49). He also finished second in the 100-yard butterfly touching at 51.43.
In diving, Adam Duffield put together a career day winning both the one and three-meter dives, setting new personal records in the process. He won the one-meter with a score of 290.10 and the three-meter with a score of 307.80. John Clark was able to take second in both the one and three-meter with scores of 271.40 and 293.33, respectively.
The Minutewomen put up a fight against a tough Fordham squad. Jessica Starosielec along with Jenn Corriveau, Kaitie English and Amina Meho took second in the 200-yard medley relay with a time of 1:50.37, to start the day. Starosielec would go on to win to later win the 100-yard breaststroke touching the wall with a time of 1:08.05, and finish second in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:25.30).
Fellow senior Meghan Nowak finished right behind Starosielec in both the 100 and 200-yard breaststrokes. She placed third in the 200 breast with a time of 2:25.48 and second in the 100 breast with a time of 1:09.03. Anna Cavanaugh also had a successful day in the pool taking second in the 200-yard freestyle (1:55.40), third in the 100-yard freestyle (54.39) and fourth in the 100-yard butterfly (1:02.45).
On the diving board, Molly Elkins finished second in the one-meter dive with a score of 226.65 and third in the three-meter registering a score of 236.85.
Both teams will be preparing over the next few weeks for the Atlantic 10 Championships taking place in Buffalo, N.Y. from Feb. 23-26.
