UMass S&D Closes Out Season At Fordham

AMHERST, Mass. - The UMass men's and women's swimming and diving teams will be traveling to the Bronx, N.Y. this weekend to take on Fordham in the final dual meet of the season. The Minutemen are coming off a first place finish at the Dartmouth Invitational, while the women took second place behind the host, Dartmouth. The meet against the Rams is scheduled to start at 1pm on Saturday February 5.
Last Time Against The Rams
Last season UMass took on Fordham at Joseph Rogers Pool on senior day. The men pulled out the victory defeating the Rams, 179-114, while the women fell, 188-112.
The teams honored ten seniors prior to the meet, as the men honored Mike Berthaume, Justin Brooks, Juan Moliere, Tim Smith and Andrew Willbrant while the women honored Joan Baltazar, Eryn Brewer, Ashley Dress Elizabeth Walsh and Liz Wester.
Jason Cook started the day breaking his own pool record in the three-meter dive with a score of 369.30. Cook went on to win the one-meter competition as well, while teammate Adam Duffield finished just behind him, taking second in both diving events.
The Minutemen were helped by stand-out individual performances, as senior Justin Brooks swam his best time of the year in the 1000 free, touching the wall in 9:38.41, beating his previous season-best by 20 seconds. Fellow senior Mike Berthaume also shined on senior day, ending his career at Joseph Rogers Pool with a pair of victories in the 100 fly (50.23) and 200 fly (1:53.43), while senior Juan Moliere accomplished the same feat, leading a sweep of the 50 free with a time of 21.08 and grabbing first in the 100 free (46.62).
The Minutewomen put up a good fight against the Rams, who came into the meet a perfect 10-0 on the year and tabbed to take home the A-10 title. Fordham set two pool records in the victory, as the 200 medley relay team set the record with a time of 1:46.64, and Brienne Ryan set the record in the 100 back with a time of 56.61, breaking Elizabeth Walsh's record of 1:00.33.
Freshman Julie Magyar swam a great race in the 1000 free, just edging out Fordham's Megan McGorry in the final two laps to take first with a time of 10:34.53. Magyar would go on to finish third in the 500 free, registering a time of 5:11.19.
The women had numerous second-place finishes, including a tight race in the 100 breaststroke that saw the Rams Nicole Marshall just beat out Jessica Starosielec by .02 seconds, as Starosielec finished second with a time of 1:06.49. Kayla Tegeler and Jennifer Corriveau also picked-up second-place finishes in the 200 fly and 50 free respectively. Sarah Kanellas also went on to finish second in the 100 fly, notching a time of 59.20, while Chelsea Downing claimed second in the 200 IM (2:11.39).
Inglis Sets New School Record
Freshman Chris Inglis set a new school record in the 1000-yard freestyle last weekend at the Dartmouth Invitational with a time of 9:29.40. Scott Reed set the previous record of 9:30.65, during the 1990-91 season.
Inglis, a native of Mashpee, Mass., has had a stellar first season with the Minutemen. Along with being named Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Week twice, he also boasts top-5 times in the conference in the 1000-yard freestyle (1st, 9:29.40), 1650-yard freestyle (3rd, 16:19.4) and the 200-yard butterfly (4th, 1:54.1).
Howard Named A-10 Performer Of The Week
Senior Christopher Howard was named Atlantic 10 Performer of the Week for his performance at the Dartmouth Invitational last weekend.
The Milton, Mass. native, secured two individual second place finishes in the 50-yard freestyle (20.99), 100-yard butterfly (51.10) and a fourth place finish in the 100-yard freestyle (47.46). He also assisted both 200-yard medley relay team and the 200-yard freestyle relay team to second place finishes with times of 1:34.03 and 1:24.98, respectively.
To this point in the season, he owns the fastest times on the team in the 50-yard freestyle (20.99), 100-yard freestyle (46.41) and the 100-yard butterfly (51.10).
Scouting Fordham
The strength of the Fordham swimming and diving teams resides on the women's side. The Fordham women were tabbed to finish first this season after coming off their first Atlantic 10 championship last season. The women are led by sophomore Brienne Ryan, who has been named Atlantic 10 Performer of the Week three times this season and owns conference best times in the 100 back (54.93) and the 200 back (2:01.6).
The Fordham men were tabbed to finish fourth in the Atlantic 10 this season. The Rams have been led by the performance of freshman Shintaro Noguchi. He has been named Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Week three times thus far, and holds conference top-10 times in the 50-yard freestyle, 100-yard freestyle, 200-yard freestyle and 200-yard butterfly.

Following the meet at Fordham both the men's and women's teams will be preparing for the Atlantic 10 Championships on February 23-26 in Buffalo, N.Y.
