WSWIM Hosts Northeastern, MSWIM Travel To Yale, Saturday

AMHERST, Mass. - The men and women swimming and diving teams will be back in action this weekend following a week off. The women will welcome Northeastern to Joseph Rogers Pool for a 12 p.m. start time, while the men will travel to Yale to take on the Bulldogs for a 1 p.m. meet. Both teams are coming off fourth-place finishes at the Terrier Invitational.
Last Season Against The Huskies
Bob Newcomb's women fell to Northeastern last season, 160-129. It was the eighth-straight time the Huskies were able to defeat the Minutewomen.
The women had three first-place finishes between Molly Elkins and Ingrid Woelfel. Elkins continued her success on the diving board by winning both the one and three-meter events. She picked up a score of 248.15 in the one-meter and a score of 237.53 in the three-meter. Woelfel picked up the victory in the 100 IM (1:01.52) along with a third-place finish in the 100 backstroke with a time of 1:01.90.
Last Season Against The Bulldogs
Russ Yarworth's men were victorious against Yale last season, 177-118. The Minutemen are 1-1 against Yale all-time.
The men were able to set a pool record to start the event in the 200-medley relay with a time of 1:32.49. The team of Max Butler, Peter Sacco, Christopher Howard and Trevor Ziegler were just one of twelve first-place finishes.
Derek Hursch was also able to set a pool record in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:40.69. He also finished first in the 400 IM and second in the 500 free.
Women Take Third, Men Fourth At The Terrier
The Minutewomen were able to take fourth at the Terrier finishing behind Columbia, Northeastern and Yale picking up a total of 368 points. The women set a total of four school records over the three-day meet, three of which were individual events set by freshman.
Freshman Katie Arnott set two school records, in both the 400 IM and the 200-yard breaststroke.
In the B-Final of the 400 IM, Chelsea Downing was able to finish second with a time of 4:29.49 breaking her previous school record set during the '08-'09 season. In the very next heat, Arnott was able to break that record swimming a time of 4:26.35. She finished second in the event.
The freshman would go on to break another school record in the 200-yard breaststroke, touching the wall with a time of 2:20.11. She broke Christen Dexter's time of 2:20.57 set back during the 2000-01 season.
Setting records became a trend for the freshman on the team as Zoe Judd set a record of her own in the 200-yard freestyle. She swam a 1:50.94, good for first in the event, and breaking Christa Narus' record of 1:51.04. The Minutewomen were able to take the top-three spots in the event with Amina Meho coming in second (1:51.10) and Anna Cavanaugh coming in third (1:52.38).
The team of Meho, Cavanaugh, Judd along with freshman Hannah Markey swam the 400-yard freestyle relay with a time of 3:28.17, setting another school record by .03 seconds. They finished second in the event. The men finished fourth behind Yale, Boston College and Boston University tallying a total of 600 points. The Minutemen had two first-place finishes and 14 top-five finishes.
The two first place finishes came in the 200 medley relay and the 100-yard backstroke. The 200 medley relay team of Colin Mulcahy, Timothy Gladyshev, Chris Inglis and Peter Sacco finished with a time of 1:33.35. Mulcahy would also take first in the 100 back touching the wall at a time of 50.23. Hao Luong and Kyle Jennings came in behind Mulcahy in the 100 back. Luong finished second with a time of 51.24, and Jennings took fifth with a time of 51.66. Jennings (1:51.38) and Luong (1:51.74) would also take third and fourth, respectively, in the 200-yard backstroke.
Michael Glenn, Joey Sbordon and Inglis would all pick up two top-five finishes over the two final days of the Terrier. Glenn finished second in the 400 IM (4:02.66) and third in the 200 breast (2:04.36). Sbordon took third in the 1650 free (16:00.68) and fourth in the 400 IM (4:04.28). Inglis picked up second in the 1650 free (15:58.41) and fourth in the 200 free (1:41.78).
The Road Ahead
Following this weekends meets both teams will be preparing for their winter training trip to San Juan, Puerto Rico on Jan. 8.
