Swimming And Diving Both Off To Invites This Weekend

AMHERST, Mass. - After a week off for training both the UMass men's and women's swim teams head to Boston for the Terrier Invitational. Boston University will play host to this three day affair, which includes Boston College, Yale, Holy Cross, New Hampshire, Northeastern, Drexel along with BU and the Minutemen. The women will be taking on BC, Holy Cross, BU, Yale, Northeastern, Drexel and New Hampshire, while the men will only take on BU, BC, Holy Cross, Drexel and Yale.

Both diving teams travel to Rutgers for the Galbraith Diving Invitational beginning Thursday. The two-day meet will consist of teams from Rutgers, Army, Boston University and Villanova. The divers will see action on both the one and three meter boards along with platform diving.

The men have a record of 2-1-1 so far in dual-meets this season. They picked up victories against Stony Brook and Binghamton, while tying BU in the season-opener.

The women hold a record of 3-1 in dual-meets, winning against Army, Stony Brook and Binghamton. Their only loss came against BU during the season-opener.

LAST YEAR AT THE TERRIER
Both teams finished in third place last year. The men finished with 707 points, behind first-place Boston University (801) and second-place Boston College (728). The women finished with 464 points, behind first-place BU (865.5) and second-place Northeastern (758.5).

Joey Sbordon was one of the top performers throughout the meet. He picked up a second-place finish in the 500-yard freestyle (4:36.14) and a fourth-place finish in the 400-yard IM (4:03.44) and fifth in the 1650-yard freestyle (16:18.32). He also picked up the victory as a member of the 800-yard freestyle relay with Derek Hursch, Chris Inglis and Troy Nichols.

Other top-five finishes for the men were in the 100-yard backstroke, where Max Butler came in second (51.01) and Trevor Ziegler finished third (51.08). Michael DiMarco finished fifth in the 100-yard breaststroke (58.16).

Anna Cavanaugh was a standout in the pool for the women, finishing third in the 200-yard freestyle (1:52.82), fourth in the 100-yard freestyle (52.88) and a contributing member of each relay team.

Ingrid Woelfel was another Minutewomen who had a great showing over the three-day meet. She set a school record in the 200-yard IM (now held by Tavis Potter) with a time of 2:06.68, good for fourth in the event. She also finished sixth in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:22.300).

PHRESHMAN PHENOMS
Freshman on both the men's and women's side this season have shown excellent performances in the pool, some worthy enough to be honored by the Atlantic 10 as A-10 Swimming and Diving Rookies of the Week.

Malden, Mass. native Hao Luong is the only men's swimming in the A-10 this season to receive multiple weekly honors. He was named Rookie of the Week after the opening week of the season and most recently following the two-day meet against Binghamton. He currently holds the fastest 200-yard backstroke time in the A-10 at 1:53.34.

Michael Glenn, of Overland Park, Kan., joins Luong in being named the A-10 Rookie of the Week honor. He was received this honor following the dual-meet at Army. He holds a conference best time in the 200-yard breaststroke with a time of 2:08.22.

Zoe Judd is the lone member of the women's squad to receive a weekly honor this year. The native of Acton, Mass. was named Women's Rookie of the Week following her outstanding performance against Binghamton. She currently holds conference best times in both the 100-yard and 200-yard freestyles, with times of 52.18 and 1:53.13, respectively.

TAMING THE BEARCATS
Both the men's and women's swimming and diving teams came out victorious in a two day dual-meet against Binghamton. The men won 189-125, while the women won 185.5-133.5, completing the sweep of the Bearcats.

Joey Sbordon set a new pool record for the men in the 400 IM touching the wall in first-place with a time of 4:01.35. Sbordon picked up another first-place finish in the 1000-yard freestyle with a time of 9:34.07, he finished right ahead of Chris Inglis in second who finished with a time of 9:38.95. Inglis was able to grab first place in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:41.55 and the 500-yard freestyle (4:47.24) just ahead of Sbordon in second (4:49.82).

Alexander Merkulov claimed first in the three-meter dive (296.40) and second in the one-meter dive (261.07), while teammate Conor Dunn claimed first in the one-meter (291.37) and fourth in the three (210.60).

Zoe Judd and Chelsea Downing led the way for the Minutewomen. Judd finished first in the 50-yard freestyle (24.28), 200 freestyle (1:53.13) and 100 freestyle with a time of 52.19. Downing was able to take first in the 500 freestyle (5:13.76) and the 400 IM with a time 4:41.11. She also placed second in the 1000 freestyle with a time of 10:39.31.

Michaela Butler continued her diving dominance as she placed first in the one and three-meter events, with scores of 275.62 and 247.43, respectively.

NEXT TIME OUT
The following the Terrier the men and women will heading separate ways as the men head to Yale to take on the Bulldogs, while the women welcome Northeastern into Joseph Rogers Pool. Both meets will take place on Dec. 3 with the women's beginning at 12 p.m. and the men at 1 p.m.
