Rowing Novices Show Their Talents At Head Of The Housatonic

SHELTON, Conn. - The UMass Women's Rowing team had a successful showing at the Head of the Housatonic, their season opening race. The Novice boat showed their stuff, coming in second place in the Novice 8+ with a time of 18:33.6, just 1.4 seconds off the winning boat. The boat consisted of coxswain Isabel Feldman, Arielle Gillette, Nicole Lomas, Emily Sgarlat, Paige Ryder, Marika Kopp, Kali Hryniewich, Kelly St. Cyr, and Corinne Kazmierczak.

The Varsity 8+, coxswained by Em Chiu, had an eleventh place finish out of 16 boats with a time of 17:45.4. The alternate Varsity 8+ boat, led by coxswain Emily Hajjar finished in fifteenth with a time of 19:04.9.

In the doubles races, UMass finished first, third and fourth. The first place boat finished with a time of 19:03.1.

Emily Boucher had another fourth place finish in the single sculls this year, finishing with a time of 22:01.1. Also in the 1X race was Beth Paret who finished in eighth with a time of 22:54.0.

UMass entered three boats into the 4+ race where their fastest boat finished in eighth place with a time of 19:06.6. The second and third boat placed tenth and eleventh with times of 19:57.7 and 20:37.0.

Head coach Jim Dietz also participated in the competition in the Men's Open 1X. Dietz finished in third place out of fifteen boats with a time of 19:25.4.

The Minutewomen will be back in action next Saturday, October 16 on the Connecticut River. The Novices will be hosting the annual Pumpkin Head Regatta in Northampton, Mass. and the rest of the team will head to Middleboro, Conn. for the Head of the Connecticut.
