Swimming And Diving Welcome Stony Brook, Saturday

AMHERST, Mass. - The UMass men's and women's swimming and diving teams welcome Stony Brook to Joseph Rogers Pool, Saturday for a 1 p.m. meet. The teams are coming off a split last weekend against Army as the men lost to the Black Knights 177-112, while the women won 151-149. The teams are combined for a 13-0 record against the Seawolves, with the women sitting at 7-0 and the men at 6-0.

FRESHMAN FINDING SUCCESS
The men and women have seen a lot of success out of their newcomers this year.

Hao Luong (Malden, Mass.) and Michael Glenn (Overland Park, Kan.) have stood out for the Minutemen. Luong, named Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Week after week one of the season, has won all of his individual backstroke events. He possesses conference best times in the 100-yard backstroke (51.93) and the 200-yard backstroke (1:53.34) both recorded at Army. Glenn, named A-10 Rookie of the Week this past week, owns a conference best time in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:10.59) which he picked up at Army. He also has the third fastest time in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:00.05).

Katie Arnott (Suffern, N.Y.) and Zoe Judd (Acton, Mass.) have been consistent performers on the women's side. Arnott has won four individual events in both the 200-yard breaststroke and the 200-yard IM. She has also placed second twice in the 100-yard breaststroke. In the conference she has the second fastest time in the 100 breast (1:06.71), third in the 200 breast (2:23.49) and fifth in the 200 IM (2:10.04). Judd owns the top time in the conference in a very deep and talent 100-yard freestyle group with a time of 52.89. She also holds the third fastest time in the 200-yard freestyle. Judd has assisted in top finishes in both the 200 medley relay and the 400 free relay, along with her individual events.

LAST YEAR AGAINST THE SEAWOLVES
UMass was able to stay unbeaten against Stony Brook last year with the men winning handedly 184-114 and the women winning 159-141.

Chris Inglis, Troy Nichols and Derek Hursch led the men accounting for seven top-three finishes. Inglis was able to win the 200-yard breaststroke (2:17.01), along with finishing second in the 200-yard freestyle (1:45.41) and third in the 400 IM (4:20.10). Nichols picked up the victory in the 1000-yard free clocking a time of 10:12.80, while Hursch stayed unbeaten tallying victories in the 100-yard backstroke (54.77), the 400 IM (4:09.95) and the 200-yard medley relay.

The trio of John Clark, Conor Dunn and Alexander Merkulov were able to sweep the one and three-meter dives for the Minutemen. In the one-meter Clark came out on top, followed by Dunn and Merkulov. In the three-meter Dunn finished first followed by Merkulov and then Clark.

Chelsea Downing and Anna Cavanaugh led the Minutewomen. Downing picked up the victories in both the 1000-yard freestyle (10:52.78) and the 500-yard freestyle (5:14.97), while placing second in the 400 IM (4:39.14). Cavanaugh took the win in the 100-yard butterfly touching the wall at 1:00.05. She also took second in the 200-yard freestyle (1:58.05) and 100-yard freestyle (53.98).

Molly Elkins and Hanna Swift were able to finish one-two in both the one and three-meter dives.

LAST TIME OUT
Last weekend UMass was able to pull a split in their trip to West Point, N.Y. to take on Army. The women came out victorious, 151-149, while the men fell, 177-112.

Molly Papish was a standout for the women winning the 1000-yard freestyle (10:46.36) and the 500-yard freestyle (5:13.82). She also helped the 400-yard freestyle relay to victory to seal the win for the Minutewomen touching the wall at a time of 3:33.70. Katie Arnott continued her success this season, as she was able to finish first in both the 200 IM (2:10.04) and the 200-yard breaststroke (2:23.74). The freshman was also able to pick up the second-place finish in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:07.33).

Michaela Butler swept the one and three-meter dives, scoring a 237.05 in the one-meter and a 217.08 in the three-meter.

The Minutemen were once again led by freshman Hao Luong. Last week's Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Week was able to take the win in both the 100-yard backstroke and the 200-yard backstroke with times of 51.93 and 1:53.34, respectively. He was also able to grab fourth in the 100-yard butterfly (52.20) and help the 200-medley relay to a second place finish (1:35.82).

Also making contributions for the men were Michael Glenn and Joey Sbordon. Glenn took second in the 200-yard breaststroke touching the wall at 2:10.59; he also finished second in the 200 IM (1:58.60) and fourth in the 100 breast (1:00.05). Sbordon was able to take second in the 1000 free finishing in 9:52.51. On the diving board, Alexander Merkulov finished third in the three-meter dive (270.08) and fourth in the one-meter (243.30). Conor Dunn took fifth in the three-meter (231.30) and third in the one-meter (247.05).

COMING UP NEXT
Next weekend UMass will welcome in Binghamton University for a two-day dual-meet. The meet is scheduled to start at 5 p.m. on Friday evening and continue at 10 a.m. on Saturday morning.
