Swimming And Diving Split At Army Saturday

AMHERST, Mass. - The UMass men's and women's swimming and diving teams pulled a split at Army Saturday, as the men fell to the Black Knights, 177-112, while the women got the victory, 151-149.

The Minutemen were once again led by freshman Hao Luong. Last week's Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Week was able to take the win in both the 100-yard backstroke and the 200-yard backstroke with times of 51.93 and 1:53.34, respectively. He was also able to grab fourth in the 100-yard butterfly (52.20) and help the 200-medley relay to a second place finish (1:35.82).

Also making contributions for the men were Michael Glenn and Joey Sbordon. Glenn took second in the 200-yard breaststroke touching the wall at 2:10.59; he also finished second in the 200 IM (1:58.60) and fourth in the 100 breast (1:00.05). Sbordon was able to take second in the 1000 free finishing in 9:52.51.

On the diving board, Alexander Merkulov finished third in the three-meter dive (270.08) and fourth in the one-meter (243.30). Conor Dunn took fifth in the three-meter (231.30) and third in the one-meter (247.05).

The Minutewomen had an overall great team performance to take the win against Army on the final relay of the meet. The 400-yard freestyle relay team of Anna Cavanaugh, Molly Papish, Zoe Judd and Amina Meho were able to seal the win for UMass as they finished first with a time of 3:33.70.

That win was one of three for Papish. The senior from Stony Brook, N.Y. was also able to finish first in the 1000-yard freestyle touching the wall at 10:46.36 and the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 5:13.82.

Cavanaugh was another one from that relay team to have a great day. She finished first in the 200 freestyle and second in the 100 freestyle 54.04.

Katie Arnott also continued her success this season, as she was able to finish first in both the 200 IM (2:10.04) and the 200-yard breaststroke (2:23.74). The freshman was also able to pick up the second-place finish in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:07.33).

Michaela Butler was once again able to sweep the diving events finishing with scores of 237.03 in the one-meter and 217.08 in the three-meter. Rachel Dushman finished second in the three-meter scoring a 184.28.

Both teams will be back in action this Saturday Oct. 29 as they welcome Stony Brook to Joseph Rogers Pool. The meet is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
