UMass' Mike Gedman Signs With Worcester Tornadoes

AMHERST, Mass. - Former UMass pitcher Mike Gedman recently signed a contract to play professional baseball this summer for the Worcester Tornadoes of the CanAm League. Gedman is the fourth Minuteman hurler to ink a pro contract in the past two seasons, joining Nick Serino, Bryan Leigh and Mitchell Clegg who were among the minor league ranks last summer.
Primarily serving as a reliever before starting five games as a senior in 2010, the left-hander posted a 5.59 ERA over 25 appearances for a total of 56.1 innings. He struck out 49 batters, including a career-high 29 in 33.1 innings in his final campaign with the Minutemen.
As a junior, Gedman registered five saves, tying for fourth-most in school history for a single season. He enjoyed his finest outing on the mound of his career at Saint Joseph's during his senior year, allowing just one run on five hits and striking out a career-high 10 batters in an 8-1 win over the Hawks.
Also playing first base while at UMass, Gedman finished his career at the plate with a .312 average, tallying 94 hits in 301 at bats. He totaled 15 doubles, three triples and 13 home runs, including eight as a senior.
Gedman was named to the Atlantic 10 All-Tournament Team as a junior after leading the squad to a comeback victory over Charlotte. In the contest he hit a game-tying homer in the eighth inning, helping team overcome a 4-1 deficit and later legged out an infield single and scored the go-ahead run in the 10th.
Gedman's father, Rich, was a catcher for the Boston Red Sox and served as manager for the Worcester Tornadoes from 2005 until earlier this month when he was named batting coach of the Lowell Spinners, the Red Sox' Short Season-A affiliate. Matt Gedman, Mike's younger brother, is entering his senior season with the Minutemen this spring.
