AMHERST, Mass. - The UMass women's soccer team notched its first win of 2010 on Friday afternoon at Rudd Field, using goals by four different Minutewomen to down Vermont, 4-0. The victory was the first of head coach Ed Matz's tenure at UMass and marked his 100th coaching women's soccer.
After dominating possession from the outset, the Minutewomen (1-1-0) got on the board in the 22nd minute as junior Meghan Collins drove a shot through traffic into the lower left-hand corner of the net for her first career tally.
Collins' classmate, Deanna Colarossi, later increased the margin to 2-0 as she redirected a cross from sophomore Jenna Goodwin into the goal from close range at 38:24.
UMass went on to add two more in the second half on a pair of long-range strikes. Freshman Kayla Austin bent in a tough-angle shot under the cross bar from the far left of goal at 53:17.
Then, in the 64th minute, senior Kelsey Anderson capped off the scoring with a beautiful 25-yard strike that was perfectly-placed in the top left corner.
With the clock winding down, the Catamounts (1-2-0) had their best chance to score on a shot by Midori Eckenstein in the 89th minute, but she was denied on a diving save by sophomore goalkeeper Emily Cota to preserve the shutout.
Cota totaled eight saves in net for the Minutewomen, while Sarah Leiby made four stops for Vermont.
UMass out-shot the Catamounts, 22-15, while Vermont held a 9-2 edge in corner kicks. Fouls were 9-8, against Vermont.
The Minutewomen will be back in action on Monday, Sept. 6, as the squad will play its first road match of the season, at Albany at 4 p.m.
