UAlbany Holds Off Women's Soccer, 1-0

ALBANY, N.Y. - Despite nearly doubling up UAlbany in shots, the UMass women's soccer team dropped its first road match of the season, 1-0, on Monday afternoon. The setback leaves the Minutewomen at 1-2 on the year, while the Great Danes improve 3-2 after picking up their third straight victory.
The Minutewomen controlled much of the play in the first half, taking the first six shots of the game and earning three corner kicks in the opening 20 minutes.
However, Albany managed to capitalize on its first scoring chance of the game, which came in the 23rd minute. Shayla Bergeron corralled a through ball from Maggie DeVerna to the left of goal and sent a shot high inside the far post for her fourth tally of the season.
Though UMass held a 9-3 shot advantage at the intermission, the Great Danes came out of of the break with momentum, pressuring the Minutewomen in their defensive third. Then in the final 15 minutes, the tide turned again, with UMass putting UAlbany back on its heels.
The Minutewomen had several quality scoring chances as the clock wound down, with the best coming from junior Deanna Colarossi. In the 85th minute, Colarossi found her way in behind the defense, but had her attempt from eight yards out turned aside by Dani Britt.
Colarossi logged two of UMass' seven shots on goal, as did freshman Kayla Austin.
Breanna Maggio played the first half in net for the Great Danes, registering two saves, while Britt relieved her in the second half and stopped four shots. Sophomore Emily Cota recorded two saves in net for the Minutewomen.
UMass finished the match with a 7-3 edge in corner kicks, while fouls were 14-12 against the Minutewomen.
UMass will return to action on Friday, Sept. 10, as the squad will play host to New Hampshire at 4 p.m. on Rudd Field.
