Men's Soccer Battles Vermont To 2-2 Draw

AMHERST, Mass. - Despite taking a 2-1 lead into halftime thanks to goals from Bryant Craft and Andrew Henshaw, the UMass men's soccer team was forced into a 2-2 double overtime draw by Vermont on Wednesday afternoon at Rudd Field. The match was the third draw of the season for the Minutemen who will host New Hampshire on Saturday at 1 PM. Admission is free to all at Rudd Field.
UMass goes to 1-2-3 on the year, while Vermont is now 4-1-3 extending its unbeaten streak to five games.
Patrick Alonis put the Catamounts on the board in the 8th minute of play with a shot that bent inside the left post from 20 yards out.
UMass answered with back-to-back goals from Craft and Henshaw to take a 2-1 lead that stood until the second half. Craft notched his team-leading third goal of the year in the 22nd minute, while Henshaw scored his first of the season in the 24th minute.
In the 54th minute of play, Juan Peralta made a nifty move inside the 18-yard box to get clear of the UMass defense to tie the match.
Neither team could score in the balance of regulation or in either of the overtime periods.
UMass keeper Chris Piekos made five saves in the draw, while Vermont keeper David Ramada made six.
Vermont outshot the Minutemen 19-to-17. Shots were even at 15 for each side in regulation. UMass had a 4-to-1 shot advantage in the first overtime period, but Vermont held a 3-to-0 edge in the second.
The Catamounts also held a 5-to-4 advantage in corner kicks.
UMass' Ben Arikian recorded his fourth assist of the season on Henshaw's goal in the first half. He now has 21 for his career which gives him sole possession of sixth-place all-time. One more assist will place him in a tie for fourth, while seven more will tie him with Yuri Morales as the program's career leader.
