AMHERST, Mass. - The UMass women's soccer team dropped its 2010 season opener to Washington on Friday afternoon, 3-0, at Rudd Field. Despite landing five of nine shots on target, the Minutewomen (0-1-0) were unable to solve Huskies' goalkeeper Jorde LaFontaine-Kussmann, who helped her squad improve to 2-0-0 on the season.
The teams were scoreless through the first 10 minutes, with junior Meghan Collins placing a header on frame for the first shot of the contest for either side. Then, following a scoring chance by redshirt senior Sydney Stoll that was turned aside by LaFontaine-Kussmann, Washington countered with a rush up the field. Jane Mitchell fed a through ball to Mckenna Waitley, who found the back of the net for Washington's first goal at 12:06.
Then, in the 26th minute, the Huskies increased their advantage to 2-0. Lindsey Elston sent a pass from the right side of goal to Kellye Joswick in front, who headed it home.
With the opening period winding down, the Minutewomen had a chance to cut their deficit in half as freshman Lauren Skesavage fired well-struck long range shot, but the attempt went just wide of the right post.
The final tally of the afternoon came at 49:19 as Washington capitalized on traffic in front. Amidst a scramble in the box, Annie Sittauer found Kelsey Brajkovich who knocked the ball in from close range.
After being out-shot, 9-4 in the first half, UMass was within 6-5 of the Huskies in the second to bring the final total to 15-9 in favor of Washington. The Huskies held the edge in corner kicks, as well, 7-3. Fouls were 11-4 against Washington.
Sophomore Emily Cota played all 90 minutes in net for the Minutewomen and recorded three saves.
UMass will be back in action on Friday, Sept. 3, when the squad will play host to Vermont at 4 p.m. on Rudd Field.
