Four Minutewomen Earn All-A-10 Soccer Honors

AMHERST, Mass. - Four members of the UMass women's soccer team were honored by the Atlantic 10 with postseason awards on Wednesday as junior Deanna Colarossi and senior Therese Smith were named to the All-Atlantic 10 second team, while freshman Brittany Moore was tabbed All-Atlantic 10 honorable mention and selected to the all-rookie team. Senior Ashley Hamel earned recognition for her performance in the classroom as she was one of 11 players to collect academic all-conference honors. It marks the first time since 2001 that three or more Minutewomen have garnered accolades from the A-10.

Heading into the A-10 tournament, Colarossi leads UMass in scoring with 20 points on nine goals and two assists, including two game-winners. In conference play she tallied five goals and one assist for 11 points and became the second player in the league to record a hat trick this season, scoring three times against Temple on Oct. 22.

The forward joined the Minutewomen this fall after transferring from Oakland where she was a second team All-Summit League selection in 2009 with 15 ponts on seven goals and one assist. He current total not only marks a career high, but is the most goals scored by a UMass player since 2004.

Smith, earned her first career all-league award and is second on the Minutewomen squad with 17 points on seven goals and three assists. She scored the game-winning goal in overtime to lift the team to a 1-0 win over Saint Joseph's on Oct. 24. Her point and goal totals both mark career highs for the midfielder, who has played in every possible game since coming to UMass for a total for a total of 72 matches. Smith is the program's active leading career scorer with 41 points on 16 goals and nine assists.

Moore picked up both all-conference and all-rookie team honors after starting all 18 games during the regular season. In her first campaign with the Minutewomen, she has helped the team to seven shutouts, five in A-10 play, matching the highest total for a UMass squad since 1997. Offensively, the defender has contributed two assists on the year, as well.

Hamel collected her second academic accolade in as many days, as she was recently named to the CoSIDA ESPN Academic All-District I first team. Hamel holds a 3.78 grade-point average as a Biology major. On the field this season, the forward has played in 16 games, starting 15. Despite missing two matches due to injury, Hamel is fourth on the squad in scoring with eight points on two goals and four assists.

Both of her tallies, the first two of her career, have been game-winners, coming in overtime against New Hampshire and at Fairfield. Hamel leads the Minutewomen in assists and has nearly tripled her career point total this season.
