Swimming And Diving Travel To Take On The Seawolves Saturday

AMHERST, Mass. - The UMass men's and women's swimming and diving teams will head to Stony Brook on Saturday to take on the Seawolves. Both the men and women are coming off a sweep of Army; the men won 184-116, while the women won 183-106. Both teams now stand at 1-1 on the year.

The men are led by freshman Derek Hursch, who has won all six of his individual events this year and has been named Atlantic 10 Performer of the Week (10/18) and Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Week (10/26) after only two weeks of action. Last week against Army he won the 200 free (1:41.46), the 100 free (47.19) and the 200 IM (1:55.36). Joey Sbordon continued his success winning the 1000 free (9:46.42) and the 500 free (4:43.70), while coming in second in the 200 free (1:44.12).

Kyle Jennings picked up his first win of 2010-11 in the 200 back (1:55.19), while Michael DiMarco picked up his first collegiate victory in the 200 breast (2:13.35).

On the diving board, the Minutemen took the top three spots the one-meter while taking the top two and the fourth place finish in the three-meter. Jason Cook won both events, setting a new pool and school record with a score of 334.50. He was followed by John Clark (259.50) and Adam Duffield (256.72). In the three-meter Cook also set a new pool record with a score of (368.25). Duffield placed second in the event (278.85) and Clark placed fourth (251.18).

The women who also picked up a big win this weekend were led by senior Jessica Starosielec and freshman Anna Cavanaugh. Starosielec picked up two individual victories in the 100 breast (1:08.18) and the 200 breast (2:27.77) while also picking up the victory in the 200 medley relay (1:49.80) with Gillian Bank, Sarah Kanellas and Amina Meho. Cavanaugh had a great day in the pool picking up her first collegiate win and going on to win all three of her individual events. She was victorious in the 200 free (1:55.63), the 100 free (53.57) and the 50 free (24.94).

The Minutewomen also picked up wins from Chelsea Downing in the 500 free (5:12.75), and Julie Magyar in the 1000 free (10:46.58).

In diving, Molly Elkins and Hannah Swift placed one-two, respectively, in both the one and three-meter dives. In the one-meter Elkins scored a 219.14 while Swift had a 195.75. In the three-meter Elkins scored a 217.87, followed by Swift (197.32) and Ariel Hallisey(171.15).

Both teams will be back in the pool again on Nov. 5 as they travel to Binghamton University.
