Swimming And Diving Host Army In Home-Opener Saturday

AMHERST, Mass. - The UMass men's and women's swimming and diving teams welcome the Army Black Knights to Joseph Rogers Pool this Saturday for the 2010-11 home opener. Last weekend in the season-opener against Boston University the men lost 154-146 and the women lost 177-115.
The Minutemen were led by freshman Derek Hursch, who won the 200-yard freestyle (1:44.89), the 100-yard freestyle (47.36) and the 200-yard individual medley (1:54.96) in his collegiate debut. Along with Hurch, junior Joey Sbordon picked up two wins in the 1000-yard freestyle (9:51.30) and the 500-yard freestyle (4:46.91).
Jason Cook and Adam Duffield led the men on the diving board. Cook had two first place finishes in both the one-meter and three-meter dives with scores of 298.80 and 326.03, respectively. Duffield had a second place finish in the one-meter (248.33) and third in the three-meter (243.30).
Senior Jessica Starosielec picked up the win for the Minutewomen in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:27.99), while placing second in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:07.48) and third in the 200-yard IM (2:15.24).
The 400-yard freestyle relay team of Anna Cavanaugh, Kaitie English, Tavis Potter and Amina Meho took first with a time of 3:38.52. Sarah Kanellas picked up the win in the 100-yard butterfly (59.07) and Ingrid Woelfel got the win in the 200-yard IM (2:12.72).
On the diving board for the Minutewomen, Molly Elkins finished fourth in both the one-meter (202.20) and the three-meter dives (217.95). While teammate Hannah Swift finished fifth in the one-meter (196.43) and the three-meter (203.18).
Last season against the Black Knights, UMass got a split, with the men falling 183-117, while the women emerged victorious by a score of 166.5-127.5. Sophomore Julie Magyar led the way last year for the Minutewomen winning the 1000-yard freestyle and the 500-yard freestyle. On the men's side Cook, Duffield and John Clark swept the one-meter dive. In the three-meter Cook and Duffield finished one and two. Sbordon also had a strong day finishing second in both the 1000-yard and 500-yard freestyle.
Both teams will take the pool again as they head to Stony Brook on Oct. 30.
