After scoring three goals and adding two assists in three games, Casey Wellman of the UMass hockey team has been named the UMass/Dinn Bros. Athlete of the Week. The sophomore forward from Brentwood, Calif., remains the nation's leader in goals scored per game and now ranks third nationally in points.

Wellman had two goals, including the game-winner, and an assist in the win over #18 Union in the opening game of the UConn Toyota Classic where UMass finished second. On Saturday at Boston University, he tallied a goal and an assist in the loss. His two-point game on Saturday was his ninth multi-point game of the year and the 16th of his career.

His game-winning goal last Tuesday against Union also gave him the lead nationally with four this season.

The sophomore enters this weekend's games at New Hampshire and Northeastern ranking second on the team in points with 16 goals and 11 assists. The Hockey East Rookie Scoring leader in 2008-09 has scored eight of his 16 goals on the power play. His biggest goal of the year has been the game-tying goal against New Hampshire (11/13) with just 11 seconds left in regulation. At Vermont, he posted a hat trick in the second period alone - UMass first hat trick performance since 2007-08.

In Hockey East, Wellman is 3rd in overall points (27), 1st in goals scored, is tied for 10th in assists, ranks 3rd in power play points (8-6-14), and leads the league in power play goals (8) and game-winning goals (4).

Nationally, he ranks 3rd in points per game (1.50), is 1st in goals per game (0.89), ranks 3rd in power play goals, and is 1st in game-winning goals (4).

Wellman currently has 60 points in 57 career games with 27 goals and 33 assists.
